No ring verse at Rivendell, or mention of the dwarf rings or anything much else. I've restored some of Shadow of the Past by using footage from the cut intro, as you will see.

Oh well... I'm not totally opposed to how you've done it. In fact, I'm not much opposed at all. I think what you've done, dealed the cards you've be dealed, is mighty fine. (Damn you PJ - damn you!) I like the fact all that Elvish-Orc fighting is gone. I assume it will return when Gandalf talks to Frodo about the Ring. I guess, it will seem okay there.

I hope you've removed a fair whack of the Dark Riders though - especially Gollum's squealings about the Shire. Unless, it comes a bit later - after the hobbits start their journey to Rivendell. Those Dark Riders should NOT be explained, I reckon. That first meeting on the road (when they hide Bakshi-like under the tree root) would be a great (and scary way) of introducing the Dark Riders. You know. "Oh my Gawd! Who the f*^k was that? What was that about?"

The next mention of Black Riders? When Aragorn mentions them in Bree!

Err... maybe I should just watch it and see... Very Happy

Watching it would be easier yes. And yes PJ made a pigs ear of introducing the Black Riders- much amended in this edit. You should like it- but probably won't!!

I usually just stay up on the day before I start the nightshift, then battle through and sleep when I get home the first morning. You obviously prepare ahead of time.

I guess my approach is simpler, but the day leading up to the first night can be a long one. Get to 9 or 10 and start thinking, "Why am I going to work when sane people are goint to bed?" And, "Maybe I should have at least had a cat nap." Rarely do though. The upside about nightshift is - very few (to no) bosses, minimal public contact, and, early in the week, time to scratch my arse and maybe even do some paperwork. Paperwork! Whoever thought it up should have been killed at birth!

Hate paperwork! Way to much of it in care. But yeah, no bosses is always good can actually get stuff done! And nightshift in a home involves sporadic bursts of work and periods of frankly doing bugger all, most of the other staff watch tv during the night, inbetween rounds- i go on the laptop or take notes for writing.

Before I went back out on the streets (a year ago) I had job where I could write my book (Jack) in my downtime. My last job - in communications, radios/phones that is - meant I had to sit in front of a computer all night. If nothing was happening, I had to fill my time in as I pleased - and no paperwork! Whoopie! (Gaming or e-baying or face booking is not my thing). I wrote a lot of "Jack" that way. Ended up four books, around 500,000 words. Probably a eighth of which was done at work! Whoopie! Sad. Those days are gone now.

Yeah I quite like nightshifts for that very reason-dont get downtime on a dayshift in a home but plenty at night.

I prefer it to afternoon shift. Today I start at 3pm and (hopefully) finish at 11pm. Give me a night start over this anytime. (Morning starts are marginally better - I'm a morning person).

Not far from the truth- I worked for a women, I wont name her but she was one of these women no one called by her first name always Mrs ...... She was that sort, mean, angry, and spiteful. I hated her with a passion. She ruled the hotel with an iron fist, had everyoe wound up all the time.
Ten years later she was admitted to the home I was working in with dementia. Life huh?

What use is vengeance unknown? No point defeating an enemy that can neither know they have been defeated nor are capable any longer of putting up a fight. Its no fun and you know we Tyrants, no point reeking revenge if its not fun!

Double-cruelty! Didn't a wise hobbit say it? (Me, that is. Just a minute or two ago).

Sadly, it has come that time, fare thee well, Petty.

Happily, for me, it's -

"Hi ho hi ho it's off to work I go..."

( Sad Sad Sad )

Petty's Purist LotR Edits - Page 11 Empty Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits

Post by Orwell Wed Jul 27, 2011 12:51 am

I have watched up to where Frodo passes out in Arwen's arms... Talk about my tummy churning throughout! Mad Petty, I have to view the movies two ways, can't escape it.

(1) PJ's adaptation and (2) your attempts to make make sense and be truer to Tolkien (you poor bugger!)

(1) I cringed and groaned throughout. I really have gone from "bearing up to things" to being really disappointed at the lost opportunity. PJ had the wherewithal to do much better, but didn't. Enough said - my heart is dead.

(2) You might leave the Prelim bit, as already discussed, but I think there's so much unexplained it doesn't really matter. Aragorn tells them a bit about the Nazgul. It would probably suffice. (A bit like mentioning Gondolin in The Hobbit without explanation, it worked there alright, hinting at things that the reader did not know but could only guess at. Subtlety is of course not PJ's forte).

Getting rid of some of Pippin and Merry's sillynesses is a good thing.

Like the way you bring in Gollum (both times) and Bilbo finding the ring.

The Black Riders being such a debacle, I'm not sure what you could have done. Perhaps "suspense" might have been better if they were only introduced when the hobbits were under the tree root.

I would not have put in the hobbit getting chopped, and probably not the Black Rider talking to the hobbit with the dog.

You're stuck with the Riders chasing the hobbits in the dark. That part is truly pathetic.

The Prancing Pony is a travesty - but it seems to flow better. Don't even remember what was originally there, ony guess you've altered bits.

Love the fact you've removed the Elvish translations into English. Much more atmospheric.

Good you cut out Arwen finding Aragorn. It was silly - and also out of synch with Frodo seeing her arrive.

Can you chop out Arwen sooking over Frodo in her arms? That scene is truly ghastly.

PJ has really done things with a ham for a first! I can't believe how many continuity problems exist in this part of the movie, let alone the poor story telling and sheer neglect of Tolkien!

The Council of Elrond and Onwards will have to wait a day or two. (I'm still trying to breathe!)

I can't begin to express how disappointed I am with the wasted opportunity. PJ sucks - but did not have to, which makes his crimes worse! Gives you little to work with but you've done well all things considered.

Petty's Purist LotR Edits - Page 11 Empty Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits

Post by Pettytyrant101 Wed Jul 27, 2011 1:06 am

I think I will keep the pre bit if only out of a strong sense that it should be there (only they should have done it right).

I kept the Black Rider talking to the hobbit with the dog as it at least reflected sort of things which happened in the book. The first time I think the Black Riders appear is when Frodo overhears one asking after Baggins whilst he's waiting on Sam to return. And when they meet it on the road and Pippin (again, I think) asks where it came from, Sam says "I know...hobbiton". Its there for that reason.
Unfortunetly I cannot cut out the hobbit head chop- one of the things that makes viewing choppy, more than unexpected visual cuts, its audio. If there is a bad jump in the audio there is no way round it, and I have neither the skill nor the programs to construct new music for it, the head chop is the crescendo of a piece, theres no way to cut it therefore.

"You're stuck with the Riders chasing the hobbits in the dark."

Not sure I am, after rewatching Bakshi's version I am considering right after Frodo says "We must get to Bree" cutting straight to Bree as Bakshi does.

"The Prancing Pony is a travesty - but it seems to flow better."

I removed the silliness (the Ring flying up in the air, the half pint/pint 'joke') and cut some dialogue from Butterbur where he didn't seem to know who Gandalf was (a sugestion of Ringdrottens that one).

"Can you chop out Arwen sooking over Frodo in her arms? That scene is truly ghastly."

Possibly yes, theres is a fade to white at the end of it and a fade in from white so should be able to do something with that. The only reason I havent so far as I always took Arwens line "Let what grace I have pass to him" to be the closest PJ gets to mentioning that it is Arwens place on the ship Frodo gets and as PJ took all that out along with Arwen giving frodo the jeewl to wear for comfort I left it in. What do others think of this bit? Stay or go?

I have no idea how you will find the remainder. Hopefully better than the opening! TT and RotK are the most altered from PJ's cut, there are in it I hope one or two things you might like better. (And you might find the Aragorn Arwen stuff around the Council more bearable with the new subtitles and added scenes).
