Re: Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety
A review by someone who doesn't really seem to know Tolkien. Liked it, but felt Galadriel and Elrond were miscast since they don't project the gravitas we've come to expect from Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving. Saw that coming a year ago.

Of all the breathless reviews out there by folks who obviously can't tell Tolkien from Frank Miller, the most scathing review is from someone who actually DOES know Tolkien (best line: "I was rooting for the orcs"):
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/lord-rings-rings-power-review-140000827.html
Nerd of the Rings liked it, though keep in mind he also awarded 10/10 to PJ's LotR and 6/10 to the Hobbit. More interestingly he brought a group of friends to the premier with varying amounts of Tolkien exposure, and their ratings of RoP ranged from 6 to 9.5, average 8. He didn't break it down by exposure. I kept falling asleep during this review, and had to watch it 3 times to make it through - it's after lunch but perhaps that hints at the lack of insights here.

How anyone can write such egregious lies is beyond me.
"The bespectacled Payne comes across as sweet and more reserved, and his love for Tolkien is profound — he has an almost spiritual respect for the material and goes straight to wondering WWTD to address any creative challenge faced by the show."
The man must have had zero influence over the show then.

"At one point, they met with the estate and Payne greeted Simon Tolkien in Elvish."
Cringeworthy.

I continue to be amazed that they care so much about the language and so little about anything else.

They fuck up the language as well.
This "speaking in Elvish" thing is a party trick, nothing more.

It turns out that Netflix offered a similar amount of money to the Tolkien estate for the rights, but lost out because they wanted to do a multiple series approach, not unlike Star Wars.
Since I haven't seen anything by Amazon except the trash RoP, and have liked much of what Netflix has done, I think we may have missed out here. Netflix still doesn't have the credibility of HBO, but anything would be better than what has been inflicted on us by Amazon.

Writers who put "...And that's a good thing" at the ends of article titles should be horse-whipped.

Re: Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety
{{ Well Bombadil is in RoP season two, and he looks like a child doing Halloween.
On top of that, according to the Vanity Fair article-
'For the series, Payne and McKay took the liberty of giving Bombadil a second home, on the outskirts of a region called Rhun.'
Apparently after this area becomes desolate Tom goes there to see what is happening 'as he goes on his various wanderings.'
Firstly why would Tom of all people care a jot? Secondly, hehas a summer house in Rhun? And thirdly, 'his various wanderings'!? Have they even read LotR's?
Gandalf RotK talking about going to visit Bombadil- "He is a moss-gatherer, and I have been a stone doomed to rolling."
Bombadil is not known for his wandering about!! }}

Re: Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety
"Maybe that's his character arc, he's just looking for a good pair of boots."
Finally, Nerd of the Rings says something insightful.
The guy who plays Tom has never read LotR. No doubt he'll nail the character. They'll actually have him trying to sing and spout poetry. This is going to be epic.

Re: Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety
Im so glad Im not now, not then, not fecking ever, going to watch anymore more dribbling shit from these people. Seems to me the only ones to do Tolkien any justice or understanding is, the English. Here is a chance that yet again has been blown out the water. The colours Tom wears are the colours of HIM, his soul if you like. Hes a merry old soul, hes happy to live in a world of his own, " old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow". To me he is a "natural man ", just eats when hes hungry, sleeps when hes tired, not interested in anyone elses troubles though he knows of them, he took Goldberry because he fell for her, He tried the ring on but it didnt make him vanish because I think he didnt give a dam and the ring knew it. The Hobbits knew of him because he was a man of nature, much like them. His hands were brown because he was out in the good earth most of the time. Plus, he stayed in his own part of the country, he knew where he belonged and was happy there. His bright clothes reflect his bright nature. As kids we read LOTRs and often skipped about singing "hey Tom Bombadiloooooo ". we danced about and spent all our summers in an area called Tingles Dingles which was a quiet secret wood with a stream running through it, we loved it and it made us happy, so I get how Tom was. With him it was summer forever. Now this bunch of numpties have got hold of him they will not resist making him have a dark side because this is what you do when you dont understand, Even when he tried the ring on he laughed, when he told the tree to cough up one of the hobbits he was merry about it, "Hey dol, derry dol " is still in my head. Why cant people stick more to the books ? Is this just going to be the provenance of Jackson alone ? Is there not anyone to take him on and bring out a more honest version ? I believe one day someone will and get it, and all the other Tolkien stories, out of the clutches of moondreamers.
