I can think of spending better ways of a 60th special...like...sucking up pond water thru a straw with the ducks still in it.....tho the ducks will have to get out the way, especially if large lumps of duck manure clogs up & sticks the straw.....but then the fun is......suck harder

{{ Listen while you can- full Who audiobook Scratchman. Written by 4th Doctor Tom Baker about the 4th Doctor, and in my experience at least is the only Who book Ive read/heard that is in the 1st person from the Doctors pov.
Im up to chapter 3 and thoroughly enjoying it, not only am I finding it a well written Who story Bakers reading of his won work is suitably, well him. Also I feel there is a real affection for the characters of Sarah Jane and Harry Sullivan shown, Sarah in particular and he captures in some delightful moments little touches like how she swings her arms when shes bored that completely capture 70's Sarah Jane. And theres some great lines too. Enjoy}}

just been listening to a Youtuber moaning about current Doctor Who and he asked if anyoe remembered when Dr Who was so cool that even Peter Jackson was trolling us about writing an episode? you cant imagine PJ doing that now can you. like him or loathe him PJ has got chops on the international stage. and he wouldn't want to be associated with the current dross. it just shows the drop in status and prestige.

I am somewhat worried by two errors in the last episode of Who that would seem to hint Chibbers doesnt know his Who lore- of particular concern as his arc for this series seems poised to completely rewrite that lore.

- In the scene between Doctor and Master on the Eiffel Tower the Master makes a jokey reference to never having apoligised for Jodrell bank.
This is supposed to be a reference to the 4th Doctor story Logopolis, in which after fightng the Master the Doctor falls from a radio telescope (the same thing was referenced in The Doctor Falls when the Master is asking 12 how many different ways he has died and says 'I know you've fallen.')
However though the scene was meant to be shot at Jodrell Bank (they couldn't get permission and used a model based on it) it was not supposed to be Jodrell bank in story, but the Pharos Project. In Who lore the Doctor and Master never fought on Jodrell Bank. So thats mistakle number one. Its a wee bit obscure (RTD and Moffat wouldnt have missed it though) and it was from classic era.
The next one however is harder to forgive. In the same scene the Master tells the Doctor he returned to Gallifrey still stuck in its bubble universe, and when the Doctor goes there we see the TARDIS has to break from the main time vortex and into the bubble universe to get there.
Only problem is at end of series 9 we learned whilst on Gallifrey that it was no longer in that bubble universe. The Timelords had found a way to restore it to the normal universe, but had put it at the very ends of time when all other races were all but gone to avoid resparking another Time War. This is pretty major thing to have missed, and it was only a few years ago and was the very last time before now Who went to Gallifrey. How could he not know this?
As I say it wouldnt be so bad if the arc wasnt seemingly about rewriting the history of the show (worryingly I dont think thematically it was a coincidnece this series opened on an episode with a plot about rewriting DNA).

What a joke this has become. }}

- The plot is not good, it borrows from previous Who and rewrites Who lore about earth, then tries to cop out of having done so, but its not the worst thing about it.
As far as the plot goes Grahame wins a holiday at a resort, they are all telportred there and almost immediately the resort comes under attack from slobbering toothy monsters. A lot of complete nonsense happens before it turn out the ruined planet the resort is on is actually a destroyed future earth having fallen to climate change and war as is continually driven home to us including an awful preachy right at you speech from the Doctor at episodes end on the how we must change our ways.
If that premise sound pretty bad, and it is, like I say its not so bad as how its executed.
So my first issue was immediately upon a coupon for a holiday gained from a vending machine having the ability to teleport a group of people from the interior of a supposedly impregnable TARDIS across Space and Time to a holiday resort planet and back again at the end. Seems in Chibnall Who the TARDIS is easy to access if your a delivery robot or a cheap holiday prize.
The resort itself makes no sense whatsoever. Its inside a dome, but from inside it looks like its on a beautiful planet when in reality its on a desolate planet. This is a nice idea. However this entire resort we learn is being run by one women, one security guard and some sort of half-cat, half squirrel woman. The woman who runs the resort bought the polluted wrecked planet cheap, and hopes to eventually terraform it by making a fortune from the resort. Despite the fact she knows there is a very dangerous apex predator outside.
So to be clear she can afford to buy and build a resort with a massive holographic wall all around it, and she tricks customers into thinking they are on a luxury planet, and its all about the money but there's only about twenty guests and they are giving away free holidays in vending machines? And she cant afford more than two staff. She knows it dangerous, she has shields and an arsenal of weapons, but only one of those two is security? How could this place function?
Anyhow at this time Ryan is trying to chat up a nice girl who turns out to be the estranged daughter of resort owner woman and has smuggled in a whole bunch of oversized novelty bombs to blow the resort up as revenge on her mum not having paid her any attention all her life, she has also infected the systems with a virus which causes the shield protecting it to go down and the monsters called the Dregs (for reasons which will make you wince) back in and start slaughtering people.
Except one old man, as we were introduced to him and his would be elderly wife early on, he gets taken out with Dregs into the wasteland. So everyone else gets in a truck and follows for some reason, only for them to find him, well hear him, where he calmly asks to marry his partner and then if they will kill him. Why we never find out. What have the Dregs done to him? No idea? Why is he still talking? Dunno. Why is he so calm and seemingly in no pain when he speaks? Not a clue.
Anyhow the Dregs attack them in their truck, they abandon the truck, run back to the truck then abandon truck again to make for some tunnels leading back into the resort chased by monsters. Woman who owns the resort suddenly has a complete change of personality and character and stays behind to sacrifice herself so the rest can escape. We are told Dregs move fast, unfortunately as they look like generic scary monster aliens in Who- ie people moving awkwardly in rubber suits when we see them they at best can muster a slow lumber and are more laughable than scary.
On the way back the Doctor discovers the tunnels they are in are in fact the Siberian underground system and this is in fact a destroyed earth (this is almost beat for beat the reveal that the planet the 6th Doctor and Perry are on is Earth in Trial of the time Lords) and a quick mind meld with a monster tells her these are the remains of humans who survived the end of earth from global warming and nuclear war. You see, they are the Dregs of humanity, get it?!
They all try to get to a transporter to escape after the bombs go off blowing up the resort and owner woman miraculously pops back up out of nowhere and miles from where they left her to save them from some Dregs and stand finally with her estranged daughter as the Doctor and fam teleport out to the TARDIS. Then the Doctor gives her preachy speech about climate change.
Ive missed characters out because they are irrelevant in the end. As well as the old couple there is a father son engineer team so boringly written its painful, he's an engineer but not very good, the kids brilliant but Dad never recognises it until kid pulls some engineering out at the end to help save the day.
There are ridiculous resolutions to problems, to get the transporter to work they need a particular stuff, something-4 but they only have something-3 but turns out you can turn into something-4 if you happen to have thisone very special thing, a type of virus, one of which the Doctor just so happened to capture at the start and just happens to have been carrying about with her, so that's an amazingly lucky coincidence.
And given last week where the Doctor saved the fam after the event there is no reason not to use the TARDIS and go save mother/daughter team. That wouldn't even be crossing their line as its happening now and after they left events. They could turn up a split second after they left and save them- but no, this Doctor would rather lecture us instead of saving lives.
And given episode 1 and 2 was shot in south africa, this one was shot in tenerife its a bit rich to then lecture us on global warming- what was the carbon footprint of globe trotting the entire production all over the place?
Another issue is the direction, its awful, scenes that should be fearful and scary just aren't and lack any tension or scares, the sets are dull and lacking imagination, th elighting rearelyt srves the mood an dis studio flat, the costumes are outright embarrassing, the cat woman and just plonking a couple green wigs on people islike a kids dress-up. It looks like the dark cheap days of 1980's Who right before it was cancelled.
As I mentioned this rewrites what we know of Earth in Who- we know for example that Earth is temporary abandoned when solar flares burn up the surface- 4th Doctor Ark in Space, 11th Doctor- Beast Below, we know there is much later after its re-inhabited the Great and Bounteous Human Empire as in 9th Doctor Long Game.
Now though we see it was in fact destroyed not long into our current future by us through ignoring the warning signs of global warming, which led to disaster and starvation and migration which led to nuclear war and wiped us out.
At episodes end we then get a very weak, oh but time can be rewritten this is one possible future timeline of earth excuse. But its playing fast and loose for the sake of a lecture.
The Doctor is back to babbling and expositioning at high speed everything she is about to do and the technobabble get out jail free card of the week is back - this week was the stuff for the teleporter, like the Battle of ranksor shitty's plot saving head devices, or resoltuons plot saving microwave. Same cheap writing trick over and over- they just happen to have on them the one thing they will need to save the day come the resoluton.
Yaz is back to just following the Doctor about with nothing of consequence to do. Grahame just got was is becoming his stable of a few comedy lines. Ryan got more to do but the girl he likes and her relationship with her mother and reasons for doing it are so underdeveloped its hard to care plus how did she get all those bombs from wherever she came from, through the travel and onto the planet? Are there no checks?)
So summing up there were some seeds of ideas in here but so buried under weak writing, poor realisation, bad designs and costumes, weak performances, bad directing, cheap sets, lumbering awkward monsters, a babbling preachy Doctor and a useless set of companions who add nothing to any of it. Oh and I'm not liking the music either, when its noticeable at all its distracting and doesnt seem to be serving the scene well, and most of the time its so unremarkable you cant even remember if there was any soundtrack.
What a joke this has become.

- According to the Doctor's speech at the end this was a possible earth timeline- so the prize of a free holiday can not only transport a large group across vast distances of space, also through time, but can take them to alternative earth timelines too? And when it sends them back it can send them back to an impenatrable TARDIS which is in flight.
Apart from that should not even be possible how can the resort afford such technology plus the holographic dome and how is it all maintained by one engineer and a child, one security guard and one hostess?
Why would a virus made to infiltrate and distrupt the computer systems infect humans?
Why is it an actual physical wormy thing?
Why would it be able to tranform the chemical they need from one state into another? Its a computer virus, those are some pretty diverse skills it has.
Why would the owner not hire more security when she knew there was a large dangerous enemy force outside the dome? She has clearly spent a fortune on weaponry but not hired any staff or security fro some reason.
If the daughters plan was to blow up the resort why was she putting viruses in the system that lowered the shields when she didn't even know there was anything outside of them? What was the motivation for the character? (other than as a plot device to resolve the dilemna at the end that is!).
After the daughter got back with Ryan, having seen the attack, all the guests killed and only just escaped withtheir lives in the transporter, why does she immediatly go about her plan to still blow up the resort, whats the point any more?
Why is her character played as if we are supposed to like and sympathise with her? - her plan is to blow up a holiday resort and murder innocent holiday makers.
What happened to Benni?
Why could he still talk?
Why did he sound so normal and calm?
He's an old man who at the very least has been assualted by monsters, kidnapped by them and dragged across a supposedly posionous landscape at high speed for mile after mile, he isnt even out of breath.
Why when they went searching for him did they take all the civilians with them?
The Dreg inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen- how, whats the oxygen a byproduct of?
If the planet is desolate and supposedly designated lifeless why do we see seemingly healthy trees and bushes everywhere?
And if it is lifeless what are all those Dreg living on?
Why are the Dreg as intelligent as the scene requires, for 90% they are like mindless animals, but for one big scene where the Doctor has to talk to one and persuade it they are mutually of benefit to each others survival it seems to understand her fine and can reason.
When the Doctor looks in the Dregs mind she sees the history of what happened to earth, so is this Dreg meant to be an actual survivor who lived through it and mutated into this and its their memory?
Or has the Doctor got some new ability to peer into time through a persons DNA or something?
How did boss women survive out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by Dreg and how did she get back to the resort and how did no one see her coming when she suddenly pops up, least of all the Dreg who are all looking that way?
Why doesn't the Doctor immediately go save the mother/daughter when they get back to the TARDIS?
And why do none of the companions, especialy Ryan, insist she try to save them?
Especially when just last week the Doctor saved al them from a crashing plane by going back in time after the events to save them (see the can of worms that opens up!).
I think a major issue among many I have with Chibbers era is I no longer feel I know what the rules of the game are or what we are playing by, or that Chibbers wont just change the rules on a whim.
The idea a holdiay resort could transport people across vast distances and time from within the safety and sealed interior of a TARDIS (remember the interior isnt even in the same dimension!) that could or would never happen. Now its happened three times in Chibber era, first with a delivery robot popping up in the TARDIS and then last weeks glowy monster breaking through the door and now even a cheap holiday resort can get in and transport people about.
Before travel to alternate realities, timelines and other dimensions was extremely rare, hard and very dangerous, 10's era in especial made a big deal about that, now a prize from a vending machine can take you there.
With this series mystery arc being everything the Doctor thinks she knows is a lie it is creating a very ungrounded sense to this era, that its adrift within its own universe building. Everything that was certain is being kicked away but nothing concrete is replacing it, the new rules seem to be whatever we need them to be this week. And thats it. And without a sense of grounding there is no sense of danger or peril for anyone, as at any moment the rules might just suddenly allow for say the Doctor going back after its all done and saving them. Or that they'll suddenly get transported away billions of miles across space and time to safety, or someone will handily pop up in the nick of time who should be dead and miles away.
The standard of thought and writing in Who right now is just shockingly bad.}}

So glad I didn't bother to watch this garbage. those costumes/wigs are shockingly bad. its like Chibers has thrown the canon rule book out and is just making it up as he goes. I doubt I will bother until Chibers/Jodie leave the show and take their woke-wank with them.
