I heard about that earlier from a friend. It's exciting that they're still publishing Tolkien's unfinished works. I wonder just how much editing had to be done by the editor (I've heard both that it's Carl Hostetter and Christopher Tolkien; not sure which is true).

It makes me feel guilty that I love the films and I dont think that is fair, no matter how much I sympathize and respect his views.

That's a very interesting interview, although it's a little disappointing that it seemed to imply in the beginning that Christopher Tolkien had refused to talk to the media for 40 years. Generally speaking he's a private person, as is his write, but he has absolutely given interviews in the past. One of the more recent ones (perhaps the most recent until now) was given to The Guardian in 2009.

Deep breaths, Petty. Laughing I see you've discovered the strange and magical world of Hollywood accounting. Yes, it's shady as hell and probably not entirely legal, but it has nothing to do with PJ. He got shafted out of money too, which he eventually settled in a lawsuit against New Line. That's why New Line said they would never work with PJ again at one point, though. Speaking of which...

Pettytyrant101 wrote:No, that we can do that and Tolkiens family don't see a penny of it or get a say in what sort of things the name Tolkien and Lord of the Rings gets put on.

...the Tolkien Estate also filed a lawsuit, which was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum which most likely numbered in the tens of millions of pounds. There were a lot of lawsuits against New Line after LOTR, but I'm pretty sure they've all been settled now.

Actually, we can! While the Tolkien Estate would rather we not be able to, but when I was in Reno in June I came across a LOTR slot machine which I played on. Well, technically my mom played it and I stood behind her and surreptitiously pushed buttons until I got kicked out for being under 21. Laughing But it's there! I had meant to post these pics sooner but I'll take the opportunity now. Smile

Tolkien in General - Page 12 Slot1

As soon as I saw it I knew I had to play this game, age be damned. Fortunately we had some vouchers that amounted to a couple dollars of free slot play so I didn't have to give the casino any of my own money.

Tolkien in General - Page 12 Slot2

I know absolutely nothing about slot machines or how to play them. This one was entirely digital and "spun" through a little animation.

Tolkien in General - Page 12 Slot3

I don't know if this was a good result or not, but I wish I had taken a picture when the screen said "ALL FRODOS WILD".

Tolkien in General - Page 12 Slot4

As you can see, we were very successful. Very Happy

I noted this exchange on the Book of Faces...

Pieter Collier Come on Carl F. Hostetter - I sort of know you do have something to do with this, or am I mistaken? Can you give us some info; Except from the fact that Tolkien worked on it for an extremely long time I don't know what it 'is'. I can guess of course, but somehow I think you have more info... am I correct?
9 hours ago · 1.

Johan Olin As usual, there is some secrecy in the Tolkien community... sigh. I thought Carl and his team were supposed to work on linguistic stuff, mainly Tolkien's invented languages, only.

Carl F. Hostetter Even if I were involved, Pieter, which I wasn't, and had any information to add beyond confirming that "The Fall of Arthur" is being published, which I don't, I wouldn't, because when somebody tells me something in confidence I respect that. And that's not "secrecy in the community," Johan (lamentable or otherwise), it's simply honorable behavior.

The House always wins Eldo- and its never your house. Mugs game Mad (I used to work for a brief time in my youth humphing slot machines about and taking them for repair- they have a switch inside -this was 20 years ago mind- which regulated how often it payed out-they are completely rigged)

I realize that casinos are rigged but I thought it was hilarious just how little we got and that it actually gave us a receipt for 20 cents. Laughing Also, I read your post as saying you humped slot machines as a youth, which had me worried for a second. Suspect

I always carry some around in my handbag when I go outside, because you know, JUST IN CASE. Haha, no I dont because I don't go outside!

Remember the bugs are not as scared as you (is that right) because fireworks are loud.
