Norc wrote:thanks ! sounds like a poem..
Poetry, you say? Hmm...
A Fjordian birthday is not just a day
But half of a year, from October to May
Even without sun there's no end to the fun
So party all night 'til the winter is done.
Happy (belated) birthday Norc!

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
I managed to track the group that did that down a couple years ago (maybe Norc helped), but nothing else they did is nearly as magical.

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
Yeah, I remember now. The group is called Bel Canto.
The song is from Winnie the Pooh, translated to Norwegian and given a tune by Thorbjørn Egner (in 1952).
I think this is Egner singing:
Hey! And here it is in Nynorsk too!

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
I wouldn't call it a direct translation. If I remember right, the song from Winnie the Pooh is somewhat different:
"The more it snows, tiddly-pom,
the more it goes, tiddly-pom
the more it goes, tiddly-pom
on snowing!
And nobody knows, tiddly-pom
how cold my toes, tiddly-pom
how cold my toes, tiddly-pom
are growing!"
"The more it snows, tiddly-pom,
the more it goes, tiddly-pom
the more it goes, tiddly-pom
on snowing!
And nobody knows, tiddly-pom
how cold my toes, tiddly-pom
how cold my toes, tiddly-pom
are growing!"

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
Not sure I get the criticism. He translated Winnie the Pooh (and several other books), and he made the tune for this song. A direct word for word or sentence by sentence translation wouldn't rhyme or make sense grammatically, so some poetic freedom is needed. It snows in the first verse and toes are cold in the second, three lines rhyme and the forth does not.

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
Not so much a criticism as a program note. I'd like to know what's going on in the third line that dances around a bit before concluding.

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
I am guessing he felt it had a better flow like that.
As direct as I can get it:
It snows, it snows, tiddeli bom
that is what it does, tiddeli bom
Now it snows more than it did before (this is the line where he's added a bit)
tiddeli bom and my oh my.
So cold it is, tiddeli bom
I feel it here, tiddeli bom
I feel it here on my toes
tiddeli bom and my oh my.

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
I like it.
Lessee, to match the rhythm more closely to the song (I clearly have massive deadlines at work):
It snows, it snows, tiddeli bom
And on it goes, tiddeli bom
It's snowing more now than before
Tiddeli bom and my oh my.
So cold it is, tiddeli bom
I feel it here, tiddeli bom
I feel it here down on my toes
Tiddeli bom and my oh my.

Excellent use of time I say. Language is important. Music is important. Children are important...

Re: Happy Birthday Norc!
haha i think you guys almost norced this thread..
Bel Canto is indeed the band, but i must say they have done more stuff that is equally magical. NRK made sakte-tv (slow tv) about northern lights, three hours. Kringkastinsorkestere (nrk's orchestra) picked the music and re-recorded it. They did three pieces with Bel Canto on it, they are really cool. a little james bond and a little oriental idk. it's cool. i know because i was there when they did the recording. because my dad's in Bel Canto. He plays the electric violin i recommend looking into that..
here's a link unfortunately it only works in norway i think.

Fantasia. Bombay. Jacob's Lullaby. Tierre Obletz.

I believe "professional musician" and "well known" was all that had been said till now.

I remembered that he was in a fairly well-known band but I had forgotten the name.

The plot thickens!
Or, Norc, rather. So to speak.
