Glad to hear you're enjoying folkhighschool, Norc!  Savor it; there will be years to come when you're at work and bored and (if you're lucky) able to surf the web on breaks or when you're supposed to be working.  College should come with the whole social experience as well though. Nod

Tales of Home [6] - Page 19 Empty Re: Tales of Home [6]

Post by Eldorion Mon Mar 02, 2015 4:16 am

I visited my mom this weekend; we stayed inside all day today but I had to come back tonight cause I have work tomorrow morning. So I get outside at like 9:15 PM and the entire driveway, road, and my car are covered in a sheet of ice. Scraping the car off was annoying but not difficult, but then I had to try to drive (on a hill) on the ice. I couldn't get any traction whatsoever and ended up backing into the curb where not even gravity could help me, but fortunately my mom (who used to live in Maine) was on hand and got the car into the middle of the road where there was less ice. From there it was pretty much a clear shot until I got back to my dad's development but the ice here isn't quite as bad.

Not looking forward to driving out of the pit for work in eight hours though. No

An area I think I was blessed in- the era of comedy on tv I grew up in- Monty Python, The Goodies, Young Ones, Blackadder, and even the 'traditional' sitcoms were just superbly written and performed- The Good Life, Open all Hours, and then there was the annual Two Ronnies xmas specials, and in Scotland the wonderful Ricky Fulton and Scotch and Wry every New Year- as much a feature for over of decade of a Hogmanay as first footing, lumps of coal and whisky!

And then the internet came along and I could listen to what I missed- the Goon Show, Round the Horn ect.

Yeah it was. I am a huge fan and of Betty Marsden, the only permanent woman on the cast- but what a woman- what a talent for comedy and voices and character. Just superb.

Yeah that laugh was painful! But then that was the point. Laughing

But like many of the woman who were in Carry On they didnt get any other offers for film or tv, yet their repertoire previously on radio like Round the Horn was so much greater an wider. They never got to show what they could really do.

I think tv and film was a disaster for decades for a whole line of female comedians that had honed their art to perfection from the Music Hall to radio.

Last time I was in Blackpool (about oh, 10 years ago now) I went to a show at the Tower that was a recreation of the bill from an original musichall performance from the early 1900's, with all the acts being recreations of the original ones- was brilliant- but there was only about 10 people there.

Was sort of like that- but thats like a sanitised version- what stuck out for me was how outright filthy it could be, without anyone ever definitely saying anything. They had elevated the art of innuendo and suggestion to a masterful degree.

A master comedy wordsmith.

And there was Sandy and Julian on Round the Horn- all at a time when being gay was still a crime punishable by imprisonment in the UK- and all being broadcast in a Sunday lunchtime slot to 15 million listeners.
