Re: the mithril-vest
My guess Petty is referring to the force of Dwarves and Elves led by Amroth. Sauron turns upon them, and drove them back 'but the gates of Moria were shut.'
From Concerning Galadriel And Celeborn anyway.

Re: the mithril-vest
@Elthir, I assume you're referring to this passage (page 250 of the Ballantine edition)?
Sauron withdrew the pursuit of Elrond and turned upon the Dwarves and the Elves of Lorinand, whom he drove back; but the Gates of Moria were shut, and he could not enter. Ever afterwards Moria had Sauron's hate, and all Orcs were commanded to harry Dwarves whenever they might.
Re: the mithril-vest
LOL Mrs Figg got me again.
Yes that's the one Eldorion, although I never interpreted that to mean the Dwarves shut the gate on Amroth's Elves -- not that Petty or anyone said they did interpret this passage as such, but that's an example of where we might have some Elves dying before the Gates of Moria, at least.

Re: the mithril-vest
I'm sure there were deaths, but to me the passage seems fairly clear that the retreating army of Dwarves and Elves were sheltered in Moria, and that Sauron's inability to pursue them further (due to the closed gate) was the cause for his hatred of Dwarves mentioned in the second sentence.
And Mrs Figg has been on fire with the BBT GIFs.

I agwee... erm sorry [left over from poor Elmer Fudd based joke earlier], I agree Eldorion.I'm sure there were deaths, but to me the passage seems fairly clear that the retreating army of Dwarves and Elves were sheltered in Moria, and that Sauron's inability to pursue them further (due to the closed gate) was the cause for his hatred of Dwarves mentioned in the second sentence.

Re: the mithril-vest
I am sure somewhere Tolkien specificly comments on it causing a bit of trouble and that the elves and the dwarves of Moria were never as close or trusting again as a result.
I shall have to do some digging. I suspect it is in Letters somewhere but that is only a drunken suspicion.
