Re: how fast do you type?
I type fairly fast. I sucked at trying to learn with typing software but eventually learned how through trial and error while typing essays for English classes.
Here's my results on the first try. I don't usually type quite this fast, so there were a few more mistakes than I normally would have.

This was fun, I'll have to try it again later and see what my score is then.Words per minute (WPM) 103

Re: how fast do you type?
The last time I tried one of these things (years ago) I was around 83 or 84, so I haven't really improved at all since then (whenever that was).

With these clumsy farmer fingers I'd be lucky to do double digits.

WPM 58
Keystrokes 326
correct words 59
Wrong words 5
Percentile 79.6
but it's not a completely correct test, because a good typer is reading ahead, with the sentence rolling on before the fingers. This was nonsense, so one's brain can't really plan ahead. I think we'd be at least 30% faster if they were real sentences.

btw, I had 2 drinks in me, but refuse to admit that could have affected my score!

Re: how fast do you type?
I agree. It felt weird just typing random words.halfwise wrote:I think we'd be at least 30% faster if they were real sentences.

Re: how fast do you type?
naah, i think because it is random words it's more correct. you still read ahead and u gotta type the word as it pops into your head. it's like taking notes or copying a text.
i don't write quite as fast as eldo, but i didn't have all that many mistakes and i write just as fast in norwegian as in english ^^ and u should see me type Benedict Cumberbatch.

Re: how fast do you type?
I thought you'd overheat halfway through typing 'Benedict Cumberbatch' and would have to stop and fan yourself before continuing.
But Norc, if the words are random you can't keep them in your head or even read them as fast. I read in chunks of at least half a sentence at a time, and it slows down my typing if I have to keep laboring over the text like that. In fact in many cases I may be rewriting sentences as I type because I mainly get the logic rather than memorize them. Not that I'm a lightning fast typer, but it does make a difference if my mind is burdened and can't flow.

I repeated with no drinks in me and got almost the same.

I just woke up like half an hour ago, but I tried again trying to be more aware of not making errors and saw a slight improvement.

Re: how fast do you type?
When I'm writing like an essay or something, I only type in short bursts before I have to pause or at least slow down and think about what I'm going to write next. But in this case I just keep my eyes fixed on the screen and let my eyes move along the line of text at a speed only slightly faster than my fingers are moving. It's a little unnatural but not too hard, for me anyway.halfwise wrote:but it's not a completely correct test, because a good typer is reading ahead, with the sentence rolling on before the fingers. Re: how fast do you type?
i see word i think word, so u basically write at the speed of thoguht, without thinking it through. so it's farilu accurate. if you think a senctense it will be basically the same.
Re: how fast do you type?
I don't think so. It's like driving on a dark night with headlights set low just ahead of the car, or with high beams so you can see the turns coming up. Different speeds are possible if you can anticipate.

Re: how fast do you type?
I edit so much I can't imagine using a transcription program. I understand it used to be common for people to dictate letters and such, but I have to see it on the page to see where i'm going, then go back and rearrange and stuff.
I take it you can do inserts and stuff by moving around the cursor? But your language use is so creative I can't imagine how any program could handle you...

Re: how fast do you type?
I just realized I have dragon dictation on my iphone (looked cool and was free, so downloaded it and promptly forgot about it). I thought I'd test it out on a Figgy classic:
Original: "Blast it all to buggery"
Transcription: "Plastic going to buggery"
Good luck with school.

So this dragon thingy- it turns what you say into what it would sound like you were drunk then?
