Re: Inaugural purist thread
Petty - I think the cutting part of it is one thing, but there is so much that was just done differently that you would need a whole reshoot and additional shoots to add the bits in we want.
I would certainly have done vast swaths of the film differently and some I think are really good. 'The Great Battle of our time' is definately one thing that I would be redoing. It could have been done so much better and should have been on a much bigger scale (and I don't mean polygon count).

Oh I would have shot it so differently Lance (and badly as I havent a clue what I'm doing) but it's amazing how much you can alter a thing just with editring (and that I do know a bit of what I'm doing at least). You seen my edits? (I forget who has access and who doesn't).

I wish I could get my computer back from the IT Doc... I'm keen to watch the edits again... Sadly, the way things are going, I'll have forgotten how to download them by the time it gets well...

I hope your PC gets well soon Orwell. To be left with only PJ's version to watch is a harsh punishment!

Understandable- only time I see PJ's cut is when I am editing. Watching them would be like a punishment for something.

Re: Inaugural purist thread
Couldn't think of anywhere else to put this....
I am being incredibly picky here but was just listening to Enya singing - May it Be.
Am I wrong or should the elvish part be pronounced differently to how she sings it?
Mornie Utúlië.... should the U and the ú not sound different? Also the 'ie' from the first word and the 'ië' from the second also sound different? Is that not the point of the accents?

Re: Inaugural purist thread
Yes, Lancebloke - you are right on the together sound if the first ie, and the separation of the i - e in the second word. I confess I do not know much about dropped vowels that depend upon tense; however, i can safely say that if it were Gaelic, and the word was denoting some sort of "possessive" (which it does not, nor does it imply a future morning...) that the U should have absolutely been dropped. But as I said, I think it stays in this case due to the tense and non-possessiveness.

Thanks for a proper reply Yavanna. Think I might like you more than those other 2.
Do we have anyone that speaks Elvish? I want to know how to pronounce it properly.

Re: Inaugural purist thread
When you say speak elvish...I was under the impression there is very little finalised languages by Tolkien? I haven't read Vinyar Tengwar etc, but wasn't the elvish in the films more or less made up?

I thought there was enough there to be able to know how to pronounce things. I didn't mean like Klingon...
Re: Inaugural purist thread
OHH! Dang it, sorry that, Lance! Jeepers, I didn't look hard enough to realize - it's the same thing with the U and the U! Yes, you are absolutely right, it is pronounced:
Morneyh UHtoooooollaaaaayyyyyeeeeee. (Dry U, then soft/long u), and since there's no umlaut on the first ie it is pronounced dry.
I'd never really thought about the UH sound until I examined the Orc version - remember, these guys were once Elves, and their language suffered, obviously, as they did, turning all the pretty umlauts into hard consonants.
*********edit:***********
Yes, Lance, it depends, however, on Whether you're talking about Sindarin or Noldoran. While there's lots of Sindaran to go around, the Noldoran (such as Galadriel) examples are few and far between. That is why PJ adopted Sindarin as the main Elvish language in his films. There's just lots more of it, and lots more grammatical rules were written down, etc.

I had never considered that, Tolkien would have of course. But yeah, the corruption of language and eventually the sounds themselves makes a lot of sense.

Lance and Yavanna are beginning to sound like Elthir. I can barely cuss with decent grammar and enunciation, so wouldn't attempt elvish.
