The graffiti "S" symbol

Did anyone ever draw this doodle in their notebooks when they were in school? It's that metal-looking S that you can create from two rows of three vertical lines. I don't recall where I first saw it but I used to draw it a ton when I was younger. There was a thread about it on another forum and people from all over the world said they were drawing it as far back as the late '70s or early '80s (which was pre-Internet, of course). The interesting part is that no one knows where the symbol originated. There's a theory that it was the logo of a skating clothing company called Stussy, but there's no evidence that the company used the symbol as a logo. It may have been used a gang sign but it's not generally believed to have originated with gangs.

I was wondering if anyone on here had come across the symbol before. The most convincing theory I've come across is that people around the world independently figured out how to connect two rows of three vertical lines to create a "S" and there is no single origin, but I'm still curious.

I always assumed I was drawing the superman logo.

I think I've drawn it once, but only because all the guys I went to school with drew it.

Hmmm, I might have. I think we were more with the bubbly 'inflated' letters or thick letters with 3d shade, decorated with horrid stipes with neon marker. Squished together as close as possible. But my friends initials where SSS, I think she drew that kind of S occasionally.
