I think of it like a story from folklore. All the tellings of the tale are a little different, but that just makes the story feel richer and  more ancient.

yes, ofcourse, so do i, but there are some things that works, and some stuff that doesn't.

That of course comes down to preference to a degree- but not just preference Norc- to take the firworks as an example- this edit aims to stick as close to the source and its structuring as possible from the exisiting footage- in which case Gandalf setting off fireworks to the delight of hobbit children contadicts his attitude in the book, where he says not even a single squib is to be given away to hobbit children, let alone setting off a whole load in his cart just to amuse them. So for this type of edit it cant remain as it doesnt fit the aim of the edit.

But it's not absolute, is it? For me, Petty's edit works amazingly well considering what he was trying to do and what he had to work with.

But I do understand. There were things in the PJ version that really annoyed me, like the mangling of the story of Narsil. That was very hard for me to forgive. Petty was able to 90% fix that, which makes the whole movie easier for me to watch.

Not a matter of trying to be 'smart' Norc- this was the aim of the edits thats all.
Theyd hardly be purist edits if I left in everything contradictory to the book now would it?

Thats the attitude- and whilst there will inevitable be changes you dont like, there may well be ones later in the story that you do- so stick with it through the bits you dont like, you never know what bits you might like.

You mention sound earlier, well, when I viewed film, petty old bean, my volume was a bit low ? I hoiked up volume on my earphones & on PC but, unless Im doing another thing stupid ? it was a bit quiet ? only a bit.Probably my end !  

Might be a dailymotion thing then- the file on it is a convereted file converted again to much lower quality for uploading, that might have an effect.
I assume you had the volume on dailymotion at max?

But there shouldnt be differences in volume scene to secne- they were all edited at the same volume- so if its quieter it all should be quieter.

The volume never fluctuated throughout ! just not as loud as say, youtube ? Im still watching it, wont put me off at all !
