Re: You'll find that legal tender
The New Zealand government's obsession with the LOTR movies frightens me.
Re: You'll find that legal tender
I find it exiting, what if my country were like that! Lembas bread at school and second breakfasts at cafes!
Re: You'll find that legal tender
You cant blame the NZ governemnt for not looking a gift horse in the mouth- they know it wont last forever and the thing with hype is you have to cash in on it while you can. Fair play to them- their semi deification of PJ seems a bit far mind you.

So if this movie doesn't do well, an entire country will mourn...

Re: You'll find that legal tender
Can't lose as I see it.
Hobbit Movie Fan 1: Oh the movies were ghastly.
HMF2: I know.
HMF1: Did you know the NZ Gov issued coins?
HMF2: Really? Fancy having coins made up that will always remind people of such a bad movie!
HMF1: I know. It was a daft risk to take.
HMF2: Yes, I can see that. A country's coins? Amazing? What country?
HMF1: New Zealand.
HMF2: How daft!
HMF1: Yes indeed.
HMF2: Where is it?
HMF1: On the other side of the world.
HMF2: I wonder what other daft things happen down there.
HMF1: I'm not sure, but I've just gotta go down there and see on my next vacation.
HMF2: Me too!
HMF3: Well, I actually loved the movies, and I can't wait to go down and see the Hobbit sites!
HMF1: And get a whole kit of Middle Earth money that's actually in circulation?
HMF3: Of course! Real Middle Earth money, not something in a Gift Pack. I'm a genuine Hobbit nut you see.
HMF1 + 2: We do see... we do!

They're not, you know. Or are you referring to the (apparent) fact that half the New Zealand population are on the dole in Ozhobbitstan?

Re: You'll find that legal tender
But New Zealand still gets only the face value. However as coinage leaves the country it counters any inflation.

The gold ones aren't worth face value, but far more.

Re: You'll find that legal tender
yes, but the state that issues them can't circulate them for anything except face value. They'll benefit from people driving up the exchange rate through acquiring these things, but the gummint only gets the legal face value. No doubt they are quite pleased to let its citizens profit up to the point it pushes inflation, which is doubtful.

Re: You'll find that legal tender
The people who buy the coins can resell them at greater than face value, but the government can only sell them at face value. So the government can only profit indirectly as the market value increases.

Re: You'll find that legal tender
I'm musing on the various meanings of the word "tender" and how they are related.
Prone to being hurt as in "tender feet" I can see somehow related to careful not to hurt, as in "tender mother".
Currency of exchange as in "legal tender" is clearly related to an offering "tender a bill".
But how are those two large classes related to each other?
EDIT: and then there's the root "tend" which "likely" as in "apples tend to fall". Why all these completely different meanings?
Oxford English Dictionary is no help (at least in compressed web form). In all cases it refers back to french tendre, but in one case refers to latin tendere to stretch or hold forth, and in another cast to Latin tenere as in delicate.

Re: You'll find that legal tender
I sometimes get beaten until I’m tender. Love me tender and all that. Doesn’t happy much anymore. My recovery time is not what it used to be, so I guess it’s just as well.
