Not that I know- and as a large proportion of our peat bogs are on top of hills and the like I cant imagine it would cost effective to get at it.
Certainly I have never heard of any major peat cutting going on- it a rare sight these days to see peat stacks out drying in the sun let alone loads of it.

This is a hill behind my home town- the top of it is called The Badd. (using google earth)

Halfwise's feet - Page 2 ThebaddCapture_zps2888a759

And this is it from above, the whole top is one massive peat bog, we cross through it going to one of our campsites in the glen beyond.

Do cranberries grow high up in windy conditions prone to snow? I may chuck some about on my way by this summer!

I'm glad to hear the bad guys didn't steal all your peat. I seem to remember they'd invented a giant evil machine that crawled through the bogs grinding them up into fuel pellets and drying them. (They probably would have gotten with it too, if not for those meddling kids!)

The cranberries would grow just fine there, but you probably wouldn't get high yields on the hill tops. One of the the main tricks of growing berries is just the right amount of water during the summer. We grow them in the lowland bogs which would naturally be too soggy, but we dig a network of shallow ditches that drain the top foot of soil so that the ground is always soggy enough that you can squeeze a few drops of water out, but not so wet that there are puddles.

Also they don't grow very well from the seeds. The best way to plant them is to take cuttings from the vines and stick them a couple inches into the peat. They'll root and grow wherever the bark gets wet, giving you berries as early as the second year, not coming into full production until 5 to 7 years, and living for hundreds of years. They're a distant cousin of heather as well as lingon. They'd love Scotland!

Oh alright, I'll tell you. Just calm down, OK? Rolling Eyes
You can probably find a pH that doesn't make either the cranberries or the fish too sick, maybe about 5.8 or so, but if you decide you'd like pickled herring you can take the pH down to 4.5 or lower and the cranberries should be just fine.
