I like the 1st idea Malick, does make sense as you read it   I havent spent enough time delving into the idea of Tom but Ive always been wary of him. I think he of all the characters is most interesting & most enigmatic.

One of the reasons I like T-Bomb is because at first glance he doesn't quite fit with the story, his chapters in some ways feel like a hold over from TH, his appearance does 'pause' the story and pace of Book 1 and I think it would be one of the first things a editor would cut, but to me it's just another admirable quirk of Tolkien's writing, he wrote the books the way he wanted to, largely for his own enjoyment, damning literary convention and 100% explanation in the process.

T-Bomb actively annoys many readers and all these years later we've never got a clear answer on his identity or motives, many Tolkien forums would be quite alot less interesting/divided with his absence.

And of course if he ever appears in a live action, or animated adaptation, Brian Blessed seems the only logical choice for the role/likeness.

Brian Blessed is a bit large though he does have the right character attributes. Dare I suggest Jack Black?

Black has the comedic timing, but I don't think he'd give off a convincing ethereal air, has he ever done a British accent before?

I spose Tom does feel a bit of an odd entry to the story but I like this diversion. He's one of those strange enigmatic people you often meet in real life. I think he was put there so that we have to realise that theres all sorts in the world. Life isnt about what I like or you like only its about acceptance sometimes.

T-bomb doesn't have an accent any more than the hobbits did. I think they managed to tune them quite nicely to be in a sort of never-never land in the movies. At least Sam and Frodo. Probably because they were Americans attempting british.

The main thing Jack Black has going for him is the right type of energy in the right type of body.

Viggo Mortensen's English accent is quite good (though he sounds almost Irish in certain parts of FOTR).

Now I actually like that idea, it makes sense, to a point, and in the books when they first meet hi he sounds like a Breelander and only drops it later when he reveals who he is and Frodo notes he know longer sounds the same. But it changes scene to scene sometimes when there is no reason for it by the above criteria. Either its because PJ used so many different takes spread across log periods of shooting time that its so inconsistent, or Viggo just couldn't quite pull it off and keep it consistent, or lord knows what but something went horribly wrong in the execution of it.}}

Yes, Aragorn changes his style more in the books than any other character, but with my tone-deaf American ears I never noticed anything in the movies.

Back to Bombadil, I think Malick's suggestion of Tom Baker would be excellent, though a bit long in the tooth these days.

well I am English and I never noticed Viggos accent changing. It sounded perfectly ok to me.

{{Really- heres a good example- the first line of this vid- then skip to 2.30 (he doesn't speak again till then and saves you seeing the future King behead an Ambassador under a flag of parly) then another line in a different accent more like the one he uses when with the fellowship- then skip to 3 mins for the big speech where his accent changes several times. Sadly this does entail having to listen to all its horrible writing If you don't understand how Tolkien writes, don't try to imitate his style
Now according to the above plan for his accent he this should be because, rallying Gondorian troops he has slipped into a Gondorian accent- except no one else in Gondor ever sounds  anything like him!}}




{{Back on the subject of Bombadil, TB is sadly now too old for the part I fear, voice for an animated version yes, but too much capering and stuff for TB, you'd need a double for some of it I fear. In his younger days he would have been perfect casting though.
I would be inclined to look towards retired dancers, who often after a lifetime of frugality put a few pounds on in later years, but retain the instinctive training for movement, which I feel would be crucial for Tom and Goldberry}}

nope. Viggos accent is perfectly acceptable. Didn't notice a thing, and I am pretty sensitive to accents. he has the slightest teeny foreign accent that doesn't take you out of the moment or jar at any point in the proceedings.

{{Even if its sounds consistent to you, although how baffles me a bit, you have to admit it does not fit with the supposed reason the dialect coach gives for the accent they developed for Aragorn- 'he has the ability to modify his speech according to where he is and who he's with'.

For that to work he should have the same accent as the Rohirrim when talking with them, the same as Gondorians when in Gondor, just as he sounded like a Breelander when first met- only the Bree one works because he sounds pretty much like everyone else there, and we don't hear enough other Bree accents to make a strong comparison. But no-one in Rohhan sounds like him, no one in Gondor sounds like him, but he has a different accent in each place that doesn't fit anyone else. With no context he just seems to change accent throughout the three films for no good reason.}}}
