That real money they expecting at that price? Ive got that spare monopoly money! For that sort of cash I'd expect a medium to come round and channel the Professor to read it personnally.

New one on me- cant say I see the thinking behind it. Tom and Goldberry are nothing like Beren and Luthien.

Re: History of Middle earth
Well one of the main problems is Tom is the oldest and fatherless. Bit of a problem if he is Beren would you not say? A mortal man with a father and mother who doesn't come into the world until long, long, long, after Tom is already there.
And Goldberry is a Water Spirit born of a River. Not say an elf maiden with an exquisite nose ME largest florist chain and its number one singer, and a father who is a King. My point being they are rather well attested to and so are Tom and Goldberry. Why anyone would think they are the same is beyond me I'm afraid (and I appreciate that was not you Chris-whoever they are they are truely deserving of the Scottish word 'numpty'*).
* someone whose words or actions are idiotic in a manner which makes them also look like a fool. The sound of the word also implies a touch of humour. (My own definition. Dictionaries never describe Scots words right-they just translate them into an Engish equivelant without all the subtleties and shades )

Re: History of Middle earth
$2400???
Not bragging but I got the whole set for about £110 new (the three volume hardback editions admittedly they can be quite awkward to read/hold but it's the cheapest I've seen them in good nick)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-History-Middle-Earth-Part/dp/0007149158/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391033508&sr=1-1&keywords=history+of+middle+earth
etc
Were they never printed in the US or something?

Re: History of Middle earth
I don't know. I must look out for a hard back edition of TH and LotR now we're talking about it. I gave away my hardback LotR (three volumes) about twenty five years ago in an act of rash kindness. What a dullard I was!

Re: History of Middle earth
I think the Alan Lee illustrated three volume set of LOTR is getting a reprint this year, and they are releasing a 60th Aniversary edition:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lord-Rings-Boxed-Set/dp/0007581149/ref=sr_1_13?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1390205383&sr=1-13&keywords=tolkien

Expensive I know, but there are dozens of hardback editions of all of Tolkiens main books.

Is there a version with Tolkien's own paintings/drawings?

Re: History of Middle earth
I've got one on my Kindle with Tolkien's drawings and recordings of him reading parts of the book, but I'm not sure if a physical version with his illustrations exist. It has to, surely. Anyone know?

Re: History of Middle earth
There's this edition of The Hobbit with his own illustrations at least:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Hobbit-70th-Anniversary-Edition/dp/0261103288/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
I had an old paperback edition form 1995 that had some of the drawings in Black and White.
You could always just buy one of the Tolkien Art books (I haven't read any of them):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Hobbit-J-R-Tolkien/dp/0007440812/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1391119561&sr=1-1&keywords=the+art+of+the+hobbit
