Purist Publications make no claim as to ownership of the images of individual members which may be used for advertising purpsoses, as disclosed in our very small print contained in the dot of the letter 'i' in Daily Purist in every issue, exempting us from all legal consequences as agreed by an official buckie bribe, recodred in the Grand Buckie Court of Scotsdale.- Purist Publications.

I wasn't aware it was a pure americanism, but I've only heard it in relation to prime male flesh. Maybe a play on cupcake?

It seems it started out as cheesecake- which was used to describe promotional pictures for films and advertising of scantily clad ladies- the first recorded use of the term with that meaning however surprisingly goes back to 1662 in Britain.

"It can be found in Poems and Songs Relating to the Late Times, published in 1662. Shortly after Oliver Cromwell died, it was used to regret the occasion of Cromwell driving certain ladies (of questionable repute) out of the town:

But ah! It goes against our hearts,
To lose our cheesecake and our tarts."

In the 1940's when films like Tarzan started they  promoted them with pics of men in loin cloths an the like, lots of hairy masculine chests on display, and the term beefcake came about among the cameramen whose job it was to film them and got into the public mind through being used in an influential US film review column.

You learn something new everyday on Forumshire!

Still no idea why anyone would make a loaf out of meat mind you.

Actually I'm not surprised beefcake came out of the photographer's world, since from my readings of the 1940's 'cheesecake' assignments were highly sought after, for in those days the only form of photographic reproduction was in the darkroom. Photographers liked to make many extras of the cheesecake shots for their own delectatory purposes.

Never heard the term cheesecake went back so far in such applications.
