LOTR/Unfinished Tales Readalong Empty LOTR/Unfinished Tales Readalong

Post by bungobaggins Fri Jan 24, 2014 2:20 am

Tolkien fans on reddit are beginning a readalong of LOTR and UT.

Discussion section for LOTR goes up this Sunday, and the following Thursday for UT.

http://www.reddit.com/r/tolkienfans/comments/1vptst/lord_of_the_rings_readalong_starts_sunday/

I don't think I'll participate in the LOTR readalong mainly because I don't want to get into a book that long at the moment. I will probably participate in the UT readalong, though.

Book clubs are a good reason for a social gathering, if you really want to read & are not eying up the guys ! Ha ha ha. I never seem to have enough hours in the day ? after reading peoples posts here, its midnight before I know it ! If I had a schedule to adhere to, I might be able to stick to a plan, for a while, possibly, maybe,  Wink

Maybe we could start our own forum read along?

I'm on Goodreads, but not reddit.

A forum readalong could be fun, but with the infrequency of which people are posting these days it could be an iffy endeavor. Shrugging

Very late reply, but yeah it's been very quiet again recently, maybe everyone is waiting in anticipation for the TBOTFA trailer...

I've been thinking again about a forum readalong (not offering to lead one-I wouldn't know where to start!) anyone interested? Any ideas? (I've just started reading Tolkien and The Great War again, it hit me you only really see readalongs of the 'Big Three' (Sil. TH, LOTR) a read along say of the BOLT could very interesting and lengthy, could keep things ticking along nicely, maybe boost traffic/lessen crabbit a bit.

Thoughts?

On a side note Reddit is both disturbing and amazing in equal measure, clicking the 'Random' tab is not something I'd advise.

but with the infrequency of which people are posting these days it could be an iffy endeavor.- Bungo

It happens, we get dips and rises in posting, and summer tends to be quite.
Once it gets dark and cold in the northern hemisphere and the rain is battering the windows people tend to post more- plus at the end of the year we have DOS EE, BOFA, return of Doctor Who with a new Doctor, and hopefully some Sherlock at xmas or in the new year.
Then there is the awards of course.

But before that we have an upcoming announcement on this years TV themed summer picnic- so hopefully there will be enough going on to keep us all talking into the new year at least.

Yes, first picnic was fancy dress, second was greek themed, this one is tv themed- you have to dress your avatar up as your favourite tv character (or persuade Norc to draw it for you!)

I did that for as long as I was on Pt. I studied each four pages and wrote about it and people joined in and discussed it. I had good regulars but there were times I was exhausted doing all the talking so we could move on. I cannot see this working here. May be there would be on days and Petty and Eldo and we would join in, but I cannot really see it. It was so hard with all those folk on Planet Tolkien.

You never know, others will, as is the Forumshire way, probably drift in and out as things catch their eye or favourite passages are reached.

The trick would be to set a schedule and move along regardless of how many people have responded, ven if its none. Folk will come and go - Id expect for example more interest in the Third Age section to be expressed by some, and more interest in the earlier period stuff from others. Its a mixed back of periods and styles is UT.

Thats a shame about only getting on the phone, but at least you can still get on at all, when do you get back to your laptop?

When its summers where most folk are posting from its often slow- hopefully the summer picnic, possible DOS trailer will liven things up.

LOTR/Unfinished Tales Readalong Empty Re: LOTR/Unfinished Tales Readalong

Post by Eldorion Mon Jun 30, 2014 6:04 pm

Yeah, I'm not sure if we have enough activity for a regularly scheduled read along. This has been a really slow month, although not just for us; the entire fandom is in a downturn right now. However, we still get really good responses to lore threads with specific topics and hooks for discussion. I probably wouldn't have enough interest to read 10 pages Unfinished Tales every night for however long it takes to get through, but I'm sure we could find plenty of interesting topics to talk about. If we want to do a little bit of legwork, we could brainstorm some ideas and have someone start a new thread with various prompts for discussion once every week or two. I think that would be pretty fun. Smile

bungobaggins wrote:I feel like there hasn't been much to talk about lately. Shrugging

Things have definitely been quiet on the movie news front. While there is plenty of material to pore over on the book front, most of it is fairly dense and esoteric at this point. The surface-level stuff has all been hashed out already. Of course, there's still stuff to talk about with other series (like Game of Thrones, though of course that's entering a hiatus now), but I don't think there's anything other than Tolkien that everyone on here likes.
