Well, anyone who had hoped to get their claws on a copy of the Facsimile First Edition of The Hobbit is going to be disappointed, the release date has been pushed back...again (and the price has gone up):

Did you know: Lee was the only actor of The Lord of the Rings who had ever met Tolkien, and he also got Tolkien's blessing to play Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings film, if one were ever made.

I wonder how he felt watching Peter Jackson destroy his friend's book, scene by scene

Not cross enough it seems to not come back and play Saruman again in TH- and he must have been weeping inside surely at the dialogue he had to deliver in it. He should have said no.

If more people had said no, what would peejers have done ? If he couldnt have Chris Lee, Cate Blanchette, Ian Mc kellen et al ? Definitely would not have gotten praise of any sort, (he hasnt got much praise now !)

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
He should have ad-libbed intelligent dialogue in place of anything particularly lore-breaking. And if Peter Jackson complained, he could have just fixed an ominous, threatening stare upon him until the director quailed before such pure determination.
Oh wait, that must be why the audio from Sarumon fades out here and there in that scene!

Agreed, Mrs Figg. Lee is an old-school professional actor. If he signs a contract, you can bet that he'll show up on time and deliver his lines as directed. He's a warhorse who doesn't care what the war's about, just as long as he's getting to fight in it.

The Notion Club Papers is supposed to be a surviving record of meetings of an Oxford society during 1986 and 1987. Part of the fictional framework includes a book 'Leaves from the Notion Club Papers' edited by a character called Howard Green and published in 2014.
Green found the club's papers after Summer Examinations of 2012, which appeared to be incomplete reports of meetings from about 1980 to 1990. In a note to the second edition, Mr. Green notes the opinions of two other persons (these people having examined the manuscript of the papers) who say that the actual paper used, and style of writing, suggest the materials date to around the 'Six Years War' (The Second World War), further noting that the idiom of the dialogues is old-fashioned and does not represent with any fidelity the colloquial language of the 1980s or present.

I like the look of that- Aragorn is a favourite character of mine, and often hugely misunderstood in my view (not least by PJ and co)

very interesting and illuminating essay on Tolkien's view of Northern religion, Chris. What isn't made clear is the sources, did all of this come from "Beowulf: the Monsters and the Critics"?

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
The real news here is that the director of The Expendables 2 also directed the music video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". Who knew?
Anyway, I'm unconvinced that either of these biopics will actually happen, but I'd certainly give them a try if they do.

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
So, uh, the more recent of the two Tolkien biopics just took a turn for the batshit.
http://www.slashfilm.com/tolkien-biopics/
“Lewis becoming the poster boy for Christianity upset Tolkien,” explained Wernher Pramschufer of Tolkien & Lewis producer Attractive Films. “And obsessive genius Tolkien is blocked, terrified of finishing The Fellowship of the Ring, for fear of the strange, psychotic visions which torture him.”
