Galadriel and her husband - Page 6 Empty Re: Galadriel and her husband

"Many thought that this saying first gave to Feanor the thought of imprisoning and blending the light of the Trees that later took shape in his hands as the Silmarils. For Feanor begged three times for a tress, but Galadriel would not give him even one hair."

This makes my personal version of her history as it puts in context the request of Gimli ,and the fact she granted it and gave him three, as if she decided to give to Gimli one for every time Feanor begged her.

"of Amazon disposition and bound up her hair as a crown when taking part in athletic feats.'"

This makes it in too- I just love the idea of Galadriel getting down to some wrestling or cross country running- beigg fiercely competitive (which I suspect she was).

Wasnt Asfaloth Glorfindels horse?

Yes Asfaloth was a random horse reference for David Smile

I agree Petty, I also adopt those same things [you just noted], for my imagined Silmarillion.

Would that be Glorfindel's Asfaloth, or Arwen's Asfaloth? scratch  And white, I assume?

Yes Glorfindel's Asfaloth David. As we know, Arwen rode a grey palfrey to Minas Tirith, although maybe Glorfindel let her ride Asfaloth at some point, I guess.

Galadriel and her husband - Page 6 Empty Nos Galadriel once again

Post by Elthir Fri Nov 22, 2013 7:55 pm

It should also be noted, if contrary to the 1977 constructed Silmarillion, than in late texts Tolkien revised Orodreth as Galadriel's brother.

Ultimately Orodreth [a Sindarin name], later named Arothir in Sindarin, became the son of Galadriel's brother Angrod, and Arothir/Orodreth became the father of Gil-galad as well. So ultimately Gil-galad was the grandson of Galadriel's brother Angrod, and a Finarfinian.

And with this, I end my somewhat detailed look at Galadriel and Celeborn. At least the 'official' part of it anyway. I mean I could still add stuff or comment in the thread I guess, but I think it's 'done enough' if I did not. Hopefully I got things right while also being clear enough where I am just giving my opinion, but sometimes an opinion can creep in where I don't see it clearly enough, especially when it's mine.

Opinions can be sneaky.

In any case this thread is, so far, calorie free and gluten free, so you may read it as many times as you want.

Galadriel and her husband - Page 6 Empty Re: Galadriel and her husband

Post by Elthir Mon Mar 24, 2014 6:09 pm

By the way, I recently stumbled over the argument [elsewhere] that perhaps Amroth as Galadriel's son is a late idea, due to...

A) Christopher Tolkien's inclusion of the Amroth idea in those revisions to Concerning Galadriel and Celeborn -- revisions which, he states, are not always possibe to tell when they were made.

And...

B) the late text in which Malgalad appears to be the name of the Lord of Lorien, not Amdir -- thus the suggestion seems to be: perhaps Amdir was out, along with Amroth 'his son', so that Amroth can be Galadriel's son.

Thought I would mention this here, since I say in this thread, rather simply, that Amroth as Galadriel's son was a rejected notion [see below].

As far as B is concerned, while 'possible' I'm not sure the speculation goes much further than that, and even Christopher Tolkien wonders if perhaps Malgagad was just a variant name of Amdir at one point [although Amroth is not noted as his son in the particular text that Malgalad appears, in any event].

To me it seems more likely that -- if Hammond and Scull correctly date CG&C to the later 1950s that is -- Tolkien had plenty of time to correct CG&C before 1969 [Amroth And Nimrodel is dated 1969 or later]...

... 'more likely' in my opinion, than the alternative, that in the same basic time frame [1968 or later] Tolkien has Amroth as the son of Amdir, but yet after that, he goes back to the older text CG&C and makes him the son of Galadriel rather...

... and if so Christopher Tolkien yet merely puts it this way, after musing about the question of whether or not Amroth was imagined as Nerwen's son when Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings: '... but whether he was or not, this view of his parentage was later rejected.'

And then he presents the late Amroth and Nimrodel text, which also illustrates Amroth son of Amdir.

This is why you have another sparkly award sitting in your Lore Tower Elthr  Nod

I rather like the idea Amroth was Galadriels son, would also make him directly related to Arwen.

Last month I was on a business trip and the hotel television wasn't working. I tried to watch a porno on pay-per-view, but it wouldn't load. So I picked up the hotel phone and said "tell me where is tech support, for I much desire to speak with them."

The form Telporno [not Teleporno] might be Tolkien's last version of this name.

If that helps  Very Happy

I mean I think it's impossible to tell, but the letter with 'orig. name Telporno' is dated December 1972. So very late.

A result of syncope? I'm not a trained linguist, but anyway see below the line.

Or if you do what I do you can avoid this unfortunate association another way -- dismiss the notion that Celeborn was a Teler from Valinor as it contradicts author-published description -- then no Telerin form need exist in any case!

But if you're going to just do what I say, let me know; as no one else does.

I won an award? Yeah! And drat!

_______

In 1972 Tolkien explained to Richard Jeffery: 'You are of course right in seeing that the [Quenya and Sindarin] words for 'silver' point to an orig[inal form]: *kyelepê: Q[uenya] tyelpe (with regular syncope of the second e): S[indarin] celeb: and Telerin telepi (in T[elerin] the syncope of the second vowel in a sequence of 2 short vowels of the same quality was not regular, but occurred in words of length such as Telperion).'

Galadriel and her husband - Page 6 Empty Re: Galadriel and her husband

Post by Elthir Wed Mar 26, 2014 1:28 pm

Today I realized, half-awake in bed yet, with some measure of anxiety I can tell you, that there was a text which is certainly later than the Telporno letter -- and maybe it has Teleporno?

So I sprang out of bed and rushed to the bedroom door, which turned out to be a window due to my half-asleep haze. Into a Yew tree I fell. After bandaging my wounds with torn shreds of my clothing, I rushed back into my tower, literally into it as the door was locked. And so I gained a few more hours of unwanted 'sleep'.

Late morning arrived, but Unfinished Tales was yet beyond my anxious grasp...

'... is it safe, is it secret? Is it secret... is it safe' I yelled, wide-eyed, hair in disarray, to some guy with a video camera who was for some reason filming this brief section of my life...

... but the video-man departed, screaming. His grey horse remained however, and proved high enough for me to ladder back into the Yew and into my broken window, further opening one wound, resulting in more loss of blood and a brief spell of hallucination in which I seemed to be preparing tea for the King of Sweden... by that passed and I tossed my teacup in black anger, and turned upon Celebrimbor... but that too wasn't real, and so...

... bloody, bruised, sore, I raced to my library, 1,000 steps of Numenorean stone above...

... and with relief found that the very late adumbrated tale had been paraphrased, and employs Celeborn without. Was Telporno in the original? Teleporno? Celeborn?

This vexed me; even more than that earlier wild-eyed scene which had seemed contrived as if for a blockbuster film of some sort...

... so I sang a song, a croaking tune to call the tower crows. And now the largest of my corvine friends bears a message to Christopher Tolkien; a plea to know... is Telporno the 'last' known form? And what's up with the grey horse thingy, if you know.

And now we wait.

Despite that no carrier crow has ever returned from anyone with any answer to any question I have ever asked.

But we must have estel.
