Let's look on the bright side...the further they move away from the book...
...The less likely they are to obtain the rights to Tolkien's other work. In his haste to throw everything aprt from the kitchen sink into these films, Jackson has sealed his fate in being allowed acess to the rest of the house i.e There is no way in hell The Tolkien esate would ever grant him acess to the Silmarillion after his arrogance and ignorance of Tolkien's story.
I also doubt all but the most ignorant of readers coming to the book via the films would be stupid enough to compare a 30's fairytale with an overblown violent action 'epic....I hope.
There, I did it, I wrote a posistive comment about the film
I'm not sure it's the type of thing the filmakers are looking for but hey it's a start.

I'm positive that these films are NOT the Hobbit. No matter how Jackson or his fanboys feel about it. Every time I see more of these films it gets worse and worse and reminds me WHY they should remove the name the Hobbit from the films. But then they wouldn't be able to make Billions off the name of Tolkien.
That was positive right?

Re: Let's look on the bright side...the further they move away from the book...
I can see why everyone's pissed (I'm rather pissed myself) about how the hobbit turned out, but have you all seen what Petty did with AUJ? I know I advocate his edits a lot, but the edit of the hobbit in particular is worth the time it takes to download it, as Jackson didn't go all wrong with AUJ and Petty's edit really shows that. I hated Radaghast and Azog as much as everyone else here, but with them and a whole lot of other crap out of the film I can actually sit down with a good hobbity meal and enjoy the movie. You'll find that almost everything from the book is there up the point where it ends, it's just covered beneath all the garbage that is Jackson's imagination. I've no idea whether it'll be possible to make an equally good edit of the second, though (sadly, I doubt it). Still, give it a go if you haven't - you don't owe it to Jackson, that's for sure, but anyone who liked the book and wants a decent film out of it owes it to him or herself at least

I'm tempted to download the edit, but I'm posting on contract off a battered old notepad, so I think it would blow up If I tried to watch the whole thing.
There was already a great movie made of the Hobbit, the one in my head.

I'm going to see a film that reminds me of the Hobbit.
If you think that way the films not too bad.

I still think (most) of the opening was excellent. I suspect Del Toro's hand in (most) of the opening sequences.

On the one hand, yet on the other. it's awfully like the One Ring sort of. I mean on the one hand you think of Tolkien and all the years he sweated and read it to Jack and did not sleep for he had to do it when his job and reading all the papers and taking in extra work and the children, and his helping out on the auxiliary and on and on was done , and you think how you would feel when fifty years from now no one has the faintest clue of what you really wrote, and then there is the thrill of going to Elrond's home and mingling with the elves, going along with Bilbo and feeling many feelings the books evoke and you know or at least you think there is not going to be anyone else that will give three years of their lives to do it right, and you find yourself sneaking and buying the tickets and the popcorn and hope you don't run into anyone who knows your purist friends from the Tolkien once a month book club.I feel like a disaster both ways. The Ring was like that, it promised you one thing if it was yours , but ,,it lied.
I saw a series I cannot remember the name in which Richard Armitage had his hair short and slicked back and was a monster on a bike. That guy can act so I want to see him. And at least I will hopefully get to see it on the right day as before it always fell on the date of my father's death and I had to wait .

Honestly the more I hear the voice of Smaug the more I like it. Those same goosebumps I got from the misty mountain song from AUJ. which ended up being one of the few things I liked... The voice for Smaug great now the visuals that's something different there. Where are his four legs? In the picture it looks like his wings are part of his front legs.... Oh well I guess getting Smaug perfect was too much to ask of Peter Jackson and his team

A Choir of Sheep opening the premier of DOS would be quite appropriate! Both culturally and metaphorically, although the irony might be lost on some of course.bungobaggins wrote:BAH BAH BAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!! BAH BAH BA-BA BAH BAH BAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!
On a separate note, and this may be old news, guess which dwarf appears briefly in The Phantom Menace?

i don't think it is thouhg..too narrow face.
Re: Let's look on the bright side...the further they move away from the book...
It is, I double-checked. And the reason his face appears too narrow is two-fold. First, he is a good twelve years younger, and secondly, the ratio is skewed on that image. If you look closely everyone's faces are, in fact, too narrow.Norc wrote:i don't think it is thouhg..too narrow face.

I'm pretty sure that is Armitage, ironic considering his Thorin always looked a bit too much like a Klingon for my liking (and much like Star Trek I didn't really 'get' his performance).

Personally I really got a kick out of the other irony here: He has appeared in both of the Great Failed Prequel Trilogies of our time. I mean, how many people made comparisons between AUJ's poor reception and the disdain many fans felt towards Star Wars I, II, and III?malickfan wrote:I'm pretty sure that is Armitage, ironic considering his Thorin always looked a bit too much like a Klingon for my liking (and much like Star Trek I didn't really 'get' his performance).
