Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
America do a lot of good in the world in fairness, its just they conversely also do a lot of bad.
For every misguided war they sell based on ignorance (selling the Iraq war as a 9/11 linked event when the two had nothing to do with one another for example) there is decades worth of aid programs, and relief efforts, such as that being provided right now to the Philippines.
Part of it seems to be a problem of education, and another part of it I suspect is that America is so big people there dont have much cause to look beyond it.

The people who make those videos always edit them to include the dumbest people they can find (assuming they're not staged to begin with). They're often hilarious, but they're not making any serious social commentary.
Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
Depending on where you were born, you can go your entire life in America without ever coming within a hundred miles of another country. And you don't have to stay at home to do so; you can travel around a fair bit and visit both major cities and national parks and still remain within America. Plus we have the benefit (or detriment) of not needing to learn foreign languages in order to communicate with much of the world. But I'm sure some of its down to chauvinism too. I think for young people especially there's a sort of attitude that Europe had its day, but now it exists primarily as a playground for Americans to vacation in rather than a relevant player on the world stage. It took me until my teens to overcome that assumption. I don't think this is necessarily a deliberate arrogance, but an unconscious thing that emerges in some environments.Pettytyrant101 wrote:Part of it seems to be a problem of education, and another part of it I suspect is that America is so big people there dont have much cause to look beyond it.

But is that a prejudice euro-view similar to the one Eldo had to overcome about Europeans?
Better to judge on personal experience where ever possible, we have a few Americans on here and they seem just the same as anyone else to the point where if I didnt know which countries people here were from, I couldnt begin to guess.
And I rather like that. People are people everywhere, dumb ones, smart ones, and most of us somewhere inbetween wondering what's for dinner.

So, did we really have 31 people on earlier today?

I hadn't even noticed that! The number includes unregistered guests. I checked our Google Analytics and it doesn't appear that we were linked to from any big sites, so it must just have been a bunch of people interested in DOS coupled with our more active than usual base of regulars.

The active user tally only counts people who have loaded a new page in the last five minutes from when the list is generated. That's the default; I could change it to include people active over, say, the past half hour, but I haven't.
Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
This site seems to rank pretty high on searches for "Hobbit Movie" and "Forum".
You know, there's things that you can do to improve search results. When I had my Lay of Leithian site up it would typically compete w/the Wikipedia article for the #1 spot. Some days it would be Wikipedia, other days it would be my site. Wikipedia is notoriously difficult to kick off of the #1 search result spot but it can be done. (In my case it was OK... since I wrote part of the wikipedia article! People would read my stuff no matter where they went!)

Well, that certainly is impressive.
I do wonder if I should maybe try and make my posts a bit more cohesive with all these people reading though.
