Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
Just to be clear I'm not trying to say that buying a new domain name would be a bad idea. It's something I've pondered in recent months since the forum (and fandom) is about to enter a new era. But I dunno that it's essential.
Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
How much would that cost?

Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
Because we're hosted through Forumotion and don't have access to the database or server (again, because I needed something cheap when I was 16) we only pay to have the Google Ads removed and for the domain registration cost, which in total is like $40 a year. Assuming that we could register a second domain and still have the old one redirect, it would be another $20 a year or something like that.
Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
That's not too much. Wait, so we'd have to move the entire forum, not just get a new domain name?

Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
I think Tolkien will always remain at our core as the main interest but calling it a Hobbit forum may limit the amount of new entries. TORn has soaked up all the more determined PJ fanboys and others seem to be dwindling. But on the other hand keeping the Hobbit in the title means that fellow Tolkien lovers can find us.

Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
@bungo, All I meant was that the forum would be located at the new domain (whatever it might be) and the old/current domain (hobbitmovieforum.com) would redirect to the new one. I wouldn't get a new domain if we weren't having the old one redirect.

Thanks for clarifying, Eldo.

Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
hmm...'hobbitforum' as opposed to 'hobbitmovieforum' I think would be ideal. But only if we can keep all the looks and functionality intact. If forumotion has that domain name free I'd be all up for it.

Odo would NOT approve. Orwell would, maybe.

Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
You would think there already are free spirits around here with the liberties taken by the Keeper of the Spirits in regards to consumption and distribution OF MY STUFF
{{{{{{Which I have yet to have but I have plenty of time yet to do so}}}}}}}}
In terms of a domain name, I know forumshire is taken and all, but I don't think keeping the name hobbit in the title is particularly appropriate anymore. Yes I know it's a draw to people (heck that's how I found the original one) but if we want to be true to our nature, we're more of a "tolkien and more" kind of place.

I have to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the benefits of hobbitforum.com as opposed to hobbitmovieforum.com are. It doesn't reflect anything particularly unique about us, and I feel that it's still gonna be dated in a few years as I expect LOTR to retake its natural position as the face/most famous part of the Tolkien franchise. Not that being dated is necessarily a bad thing on all fronts...

...I think there's something to be said for retaining a nod to our roots, and we do owe the forum's existence to The Hobbit movies. The name probably comes across as a little ironic considering the amount of criticism that goes on (not that I'm complaining) but it's accurate in its own way. But I do understand the arguments in favor of working forumshire into the domain name somehow.
Re: Forumshire passes 100,000 posts
forumshireforum.com. Isn't it obvious?

It will happen this month.
