What's your favorite chapter of the Hobbit and why?
I really like Riddles in the Dark. It's the first time, Bilbo has to act completely on his own and finds the first success in his professional career as a burglar. I remember first reading it - filled with suspense and wonder all at the same time. And that really is the nature of the Hobbit, I think.

Re: Favorite chapter
Introductory chapter. Nobody can do introductions to settings or characters like Tolkien.
Also the chapter where Bilbo meets Smaug. Smaug truly is an overwhelming personality.

If you were asking about LoTR it would be the Seige of Minas Tirith.

That's a tough one for the trilogy.

Re: Favorite chapter
In LOTR its the journey through the Withywindle valley to meeting Tom. But that whole section from leaving Crickhollow to arriving in Bree is my favourite. Also the part Faramir meets Eowyn.
In the Hobbit its going to Rivendell and Beorns Bee garden.

I love Flies and Spiders too. The dark ambience. I can imagine the solitary rays of lights beaming from the tree tops like beacons in a lonely world. Re: Favorite chapter
An Unexpected Party (followed closely by Riddles), but only if I have to choose. I love the trolls too ---- and Mirkwood... indeed, The Hobbit is a book full of perfect chapters - even A Short Rest, mainly for the allusion about times of comfort, safety and rest being boring to recount while dangerous uncomfortable things that happen are fun and exciting to recount. Wise and witty and wordperfect - that's Tolks for you - in The Hobbit at least.

On the Doorstep, followed by An Unexpected Party.
I have way too many favourite chapters in Lord of the Rings to list, but some of my favourites of the favourites are:
- The Shadow of the Past (love the subtle hints of terror and threat)
- Three is Company
- A Shortcut to Mushrooms
- Fog on the Barrowdowns
- Strider
- A Knife in the Dark
- A Journey in the Dark
- Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit
- The Stairs of Cirith Ungol
- Minas Tirith
- The Battle of the Pelennor Fields
- The Houses of Healing
- The Steward and the King
- The Scouring of the Shire
Argh...pretty much whole clumps of the books! And of course I still love all the rest!

I thought that one page with all the publishing details on it was probably the weakest part for me.

With Lotr, it's probably best to say I like the style of it. Much more than just the narrative, but also the ways the sentences are built. It's really fun to read.
The publishers page was pretty boring though, I'll agree.

maybe there is one bit in LOTR I am not keen on, when Aragorn Gimli and Lego are legging it over Rohan, it makes me feel exhausted just reading it. I feel the pain, i get puffed just thinking about all that horrible running, I HATE running.

No, I think if that were you Mrs Figg you would have done it in a nice sedan chair, with Viggo carrying at one end and Bean at the other.

He'd certainly still be alive if you had been there- a measly gang of Uruk Hai trying to take Bean away from you- not a hope in hell!

i love that bit! i don't like the sam-frodo-walking-feeling-miserable-bit.
Re: Favorite chapter
Ditto. Though journey to the crossroads is more boring than going through Mordor, even though Frodo is more miserable in mordor.

Re: Favorite chapter
I sometimes fantasize of saving Bean from the Uruks, I would knock him out with a tree branch, and then cover him up with leaves until the Uruks had all gone, then i would have told Aragorn lego and Gimlui to go get em, and that I would volunteer to stay with Bean until he comes round from the faint. That way his honour is intact and he gets to go back home, and he lives, which is the important bit.
