It looks like some of the project may be revived after all Smile

http://www.moddb.com/mods/there-and-back-again

I like the author's style as well Wink

"A story from the huge world, that described one famous university professor. Can't tell you much now. Don't really know how much content I'll create, because it takes a lot of time. P.S And espesially for Warner Bros. inc. - you guys really should rethink your relations with moddevs, free mods that covers the story of Middle Earth, positively affect the interest to all YOUR products that have any connection with Middle Earth and LOTR, instead of counteracting you should support such free mods as Merp. Just saying."
I added the bold font.

Nod

I think more and ore folks should just make mini mods based on LotR's until there are too many people to go through the cost of suing them all.

I think a team needs to release a large scale conversion mod on a torrent or something and then tell Warner Brothers to deal with it.
May just be the anger talking about what happened to Merp, but that would be so great Razz

The team that was working on Merp has begun a new project. This time they're working on an original IP.

http://www.moddb.com/games/the-lays-of-althas-sundered-order

It looks like it could be a cool indie game. I'm glad that after all that happened with Merp, they're dusting themselves off and are moving on to new projects Smile

So those bastards are making a sandbox lotr game. I wonder where they could have posiibly come up with such an idea; they're so creative. At least I know this game will be very respectful to the lore. I mean look at Talien(?)'s face. Glowing blue eyes, Night Sauron'S army returns to Mordor? From where? And oh the guys who made Guardians of Middle Earth are making this, great. Wonderful even, God bless Warner Brothers right? Honoring Tolkien's legacy.

The main character is supposed to be a wight who has free will and turns on Sauron, or something.

Merp was going to be an actual Middle Earth Roleplaying game. But it had to get axed because these joke games playing dress up might have looked bad by comparison. I'm so sick of the whole "Spirit of Tolkien" BS. Merp had a shot of actually claiming that.

That game sounds utterly dull.

"The night Sauron and his army returns to Mordor"????

Wtf is he? Santa Claus?

So he returns to Mordor in one night, spreading fear all across Middle-earth and handing out lumps of coal? Yeah, seems legit.

The last Middle-earth game I played was that RTS one. I can't remember the name, but it was like LOTR meets Age of Empires. Now that was a good game.

Hm. Sounds like one's personal arch-nemesis might be a tough foe to beat.
Also looks like they can't wait to try out some interesting musical tracks - that bowed drum I've seen used for sound effects, as well.

So this is the future? Homage is payed only to Jackson's strange and distorted version of Middle Earth while it's touted as being set in Tolkien's world. Such waste. A true successor to Merp needs to appear and makes jokes out of these types of commercialized stains.

Thank God Ive still got Skyrim to play a the very concept behind that game suck balls- and a bit of hunting about the mods scene you will find much of the Merp stuff in individual format- so far I have several of the fellowship as NPC's, the black riders, helms deep, loads of Tolkien related weapons and Gondorian armour sets.

That might actually help a bit Smile
though that other game still pisses me off Mad

Maybe when the Witcher 3 comes out, someone will mod it similar to Merp. The engine is 64-bit so no 4gb ram limit and CD Projekt Red is generally supportive of the mod scene; that's a start. I can only hope.

Oh god it just gets worse...
thanks to the extensive exclusive interviews Game Informer has done with the Monolith team, we know that Talion will be half man, half Wraith. LOTR lore wise, that seems nutty, but in the context of the game it will give Talion various powers (see into the Wraith world, transform enemies into allies), which we can get a glimpse of in the screens below Middle Earth Roleplaying Project (total conversion mod for Skyrim) - Page 7 2-ADYvweR
confused
But it's Ok because they talked to Peter Jackson so it's all canon and lore friendly.

So its the Batman game with LotR's graphics and a completely nonTolkien based story and set up.
Or in other words its a typical run of the mill film cash n game- take an existing proper game franchise (Batman in this case) and rip it off poorly.
Nothing changes.

EA did basically the same thing a few years ago by copying Star Wars: Battlefront and redubbing it Conquest. Then they lost the license to WB like six months later and had to shut down all their LOTR servers. Razz

This has been going on with games since the days of the zx spectrum. I can remember the back to the future game (and yes it was as bad an idea to make into a game as it sounds) or the game of the Burton Batman.
They are always the same, nick a popular game type, make a shoddy copy of it, and change the graphics to your chosen franchise Mad

It seems the Shadow of Mordor devs are aware of the clouds of unpopular opinion looming overhead.

Asked by Game Informer what the project means to Monolith Productions as a studio, Stephens said, "Everything. This is our future. There's nothing more important than this project."

Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic work may also be happy to know Monolith is working with Lord of the Rings licensing company Middle-earth Enterprises, as well as Academy Award-winning film director Peter Jackson, and effects studio Weta for Shadow of Mordor. Last week, lead writer Christian Cantamessa said Shadow of Mordor will be "very respectful" of Tolkien's source material, while at the same time offering a new take on the series.

If Shadow of Mordor turns out to be a success, more games could be in store, but Stephens isn't ready to commit to anything just yet.

"Our ambition is to make the best possible game experience we can. And obviously, we have lots of ideas, and we love the IP, but it's pure conjecture about a franchise or the future," he said. "We always set out to make something that could be the next best franchise. That's always our goal."
You can't have it both ways. Either make a game that is respecting the source material or don't: A Middle Earth game that doesn't respect the nuances of the setting is nothing more than a generic fantasy game playing dress up. So the very idea that they can play this PR game of being "very respectful" while at the same time having a ranger with wraith abilities isn't going to work.

At least they're showing some self awareness of how Tolkien fans are going to embrace this, the lot of good that'll do while they employ this double-speak.

"From him they learnt many things it were not good for any but the great Valar to know, for being half-comprehended such deep hidden things slay happiness; and besides many of the sayings of Melko were cunning lies or were but partly true, and the Noldoli ceased to sing, and their viols fell silent upon the hill of Kôr, for their hearts grew somewhat older as their lore grew deeper and their desires more swollen, and the books of their wisdom were multiplied as the leaves of the forest."
