lindefirien.net
Holy crap, i just discovered this. It's actually a site for game playing set in southern middle earth at the time of the kin strife, but the creators have gone into great detail describing all the lands - even so far as, far example, the depth of lake Nurnen (1240 meters) and the crops grown around there (lentils, etc).
http://wiki.lindefirion.net/HomePage
Some of it clearly is added by the creators and doesn't come straight from Tolkien, but their extrapolations feel very realistic. Fun to browse through.

Re: lindefirien.net
That's a very cool site. I'd actually browsed their maps before but then I lost the URL and couldn't find it again, so thanks for posting this! I really like their depiction of the Numenorean conception of cosmology, inspired by Tolkien's own sketches of his universe from The History of Middle-earth.

I've never known much about Tolkien-based games (MERP being the most famous, probably) but I find them fascinating.

Re: lindefirien.net
Some of the MERP modules were very well put together- I still have the Moria one and the Rohan one was very good as well I seem to remember.
Where they did embellesh (as is necessary for game details- like exactly what sort of mining equipment did dwarves use) it always seemed to be done with a great deal of respect for fitting Tolkiens ideas and world.
Ive bookmarked that link for a read later- looks very interesting- thanks Halfwise.

Re: lindefirien.net
I think it's purely there for the reading, but it's meant for devotees of a role playing game somewhat like dungeons and dragons. Which I played exactly once and couldn't understand the fascination. But this seems to go ever so much deeper.

Re: lindefirien.net
Well as a long term DM (Dungeon Master- they run the game, create the game world, keep the rules and play all the charcaters in th eworl dth eplayers arent) I always saw it like a live improvised theatre sort of thing.
A well run game, with a good story and intrigue is great fun.
If you are more of the computer game age imagine Skyrim- only inside of a programmer creating the game world athe Dm does- so whilst it has all the combat rules ect that skyrim hides under the bonnet it has the advantage that the DM is right there- so there are no limits to what a player can come up with to do.
As someone who writes I loved dming- its live interactive story telling as you have to be able to improvise the story on the hoof as the game is played and th eplayers affect it.

Skyrim Merp. Nuff said.
Though this site sounds cool. Interactive storytelling is always really dynamic. I'll give it a look.

"From him they learnt many things it were not good for any but the great Valar to know, for being half-comprehended such deep hidden things slay happiness; and besides many of the sayings of Melko were cunning lies or were but partly true, and the Noldoli ceased to sing, and their viols fell silent upon the hill of Kôr, for their hearts grew somewhat older as their lore grew deeper and their desires more swollen, and the books of their wisdom were multiplied as the leaves of the forest."

Is a minty smell left behind when someone is being fresh?

I see you haven't been briefed on the use and after effects of encryption brackets, Forest. Unfortunately some of the recent demonstrations are getting rather avant-garde and it may be hard to pick up the pattern. Just don't pay attention to anything Figgs does with them - got no sense for rules, that woman.
