Do you mind dear, Im trying to be discreet here. If they removed their details they presumably dont want their birthday flagged up, for whatever reason, so I am trying not to mention who it was. But I still dont know if I should put up the NotP anyway, maybe the person could subtlety hint if to or not.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
Said person has changed their birth year before, but IIRC the date was left the same so I think you could post the NotP unless they ask otherwise. Though it couldn't hurt to send a PM just in case.Pettytyrant101 wrote:So what happened, is the big day cancelled? Should I cancel the NotP? And, um, does anybody remember what day it is on?
Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
I'd go with a PM if you haven't already, never hurt anyone to be on the safe side.
A thought just occured to me - it'll be five years since the scheduled maintenance in December Not that I've been around for quite that long, but we're soon into our third year on the "new" forum too, which is pretty awesome A good time for an internet beer and reminiscing?

It happens We could discuss awards categories and nominations, perhaps, have one of those nights when there's lots of people on at the same time. Those nights are fun

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
Yeah, five years is crazy. Back when the original thread was started the forum had barely been online for a week. Only a handful of people had joined (nearly all regulars from the original comments section on the-hobbit-movie.com), though GB was among them. No one responded to the thread until like a year later though when Odo bumped it with his now-classic post.

The one that bumped the thread.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
Oh, okay Norc. I'll spell it out.
a. On the old forum Ady posted about performing scheduled maintenance. Both the post and the thread it was on, "scheduled maintenance", was ignored for nearly a year.
b. Eventually Odo digs up the thread for reasons known only to himself, and posts the reply "Thanks Ady, I'll rearrange my schedule."
c. The now classic reply bumped the old thread up so that other people saw it and started replying.
d. The fact that a reply to a routine administrative post would turn it into an active thread is what made the reply a classic.
I wasn't there either, but after Eldo posted the original (on the page previous to this one, which I helpfully reproduced) I went through and laboriously at great cost to the humble workings of my own life put the pieces together myself.
Fortunately I kept the notes and were able to pull them together at just the right time to present to you, dear Norclet. Here to help.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
This exchange is making me wonder: how many people here even know who Ady is/was, much less remember him?
Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
He was the founder and original admin of the site (the-hobbit-movie.com) as well as the forum, before I took over he callously sold us off to DP and we were forced to set off on our own.
Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
I only know him by reputation. I didn't know he was the founder as well. Did he participate much? I get the feeling he didn't.
btw, the format here is ever so much better, both technically and socially, then any other forum I've seen. I think Ady deserves a vote of thanks for precipitating this.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
He never participated all that much, and he almost completely stopped posting after the first six months of the forum's existence (popping back mainly to fix technical troubles). The blog on the main site started in mid-2007, when the hottest new Hobbit rumor was that Sam Raimi (of Evil Dead and Spider-Man fame) would be directing the film. Towards the end of 2008 an active group of regulars in the comments section on the blog had gathered, of whom Gandalf's Beard was one of the most active. Ady started the forum to give their discussions a better home, but most of that original group drifted away fairly quickly. They were joined by new faces like Chris and Tin, though, who obviously did stick around. And when I started posting like crazy in September 2009, followed by Odo in October, we kicked the forum up a few gears in intensity and activity.halfwise wrote:I only know him by reputation. {{{Believe it or not, we were actually quite respectable before Odo came along. }}}
On the technical side of things, the forum runs on phpBB, which is the software that Ady used. Since Dark Planet Day we've been hosted by Forumotion, who have a few options, but I picked the same version as the old forum. Old-timers might remember the succession of forum skins on the old forum (and when we first moved here), but the current design was made by Baingil in Summer 2011. The structure of the forums has also changed: the original three-category system was devised by Ady and carried over to the new forum, but two years ago I changed it to the (IMO) more efficient and rational two-category system we have now. As for the rest, well, the community has been built by all the people who post here. The dynamic of the forum changed again after the influx of Bree-landers (just like it did with the second generation of people in late 2009), but I like that we have a diverse range of perspectives on most topics. We're barely recognizable as the same original forum, but we wouldn't be here without Ady, so I am grateful to him, wherever he may be these days.btw, the format here is ever so much better, both technically and socially, then any other forum I've seen. I think Ady deserves a vote of thanks for precipitating this.
NB Thanks for humoring me and my musings on forum history.

"he almost completely stopped posting after the first six months of the forum's existence"- Eldo
That was a bit of a problem when the forum got technical issues and wouldn't let people register properly. I remember trying to register for two or three weeks (and that was after months of just visiting and reading as a guest), sending him several emails and whatnot. Finally found out what might be wrong, sent him a new email with a possible solution, he sorted it out and not long after I got an activation email, and at last I was able to register Those were good times, the Hobbit films weren't even greenlit - perhaps it would have been better if it had stayed that way
