Pettytyrant101 wrote:{{ Because that is not what we are talking about- we are talking about the gilette advert and how it accuses all men of being complicit on the basis of just being men, which is the main accusation behind the smacktalk video, criticism of the advert widely online, and the same line of thinking which has infected other media and franchises of late to their detriment.
I am arguing that this is this case, the advert does indeed seek to make all men guilty by virtue of being male, and it is also a false premise, as such behaviour is not confined to just males of the species but are traits of the species as a whole and all men are not the same nor equally complicit in anything. And if we want to seriously resolve issues then we have to take our species as a whole, address the issues together as single species, and stop this modern trend of allocating blame to sections of society whether that's on the lines of race, colour, social status or gender. }}}}
nope it doesn't 'accuse' all men, it accuses all men who bully. It doesn't attack maleness, it attacks males who bully, the culture of bullying, and the culture of excuses for bullying. Its a positive message for change, it says break the cycle, be better. I does NOT say do not be male, and it does NOT say all men should feel guilty for other men's actions. It says at some point in your life you may have acted a bit iffy due to peer pressure or lads being lads or the things your father said about women or such like. It isn't about pulling men down or guilt, its about change. The amount of bullying seen over females encroaching on 'male' territory online is overwhelming and this is from young men not middle aged men. The venom against a female cast of Ghostbusters being a case in point. Young men who should have evolved, didn't. and this is what the Gillette ad says. Be men but be better. Anyone who has a problem with that is part of the problem. Some men think the Metoo# movement is all about attacking men, they think its silly feminists who hate men, but that is the backlash for protesting against the status quo. Gillette questions the status quo, it doesn't question masculinity.
If saying don't bully is offensive it makes you wonder if masculinity is bound up with violence and if you separate violence from masculinity it is emasculated, Gillette tries to say you can separate the two without being less male, ergo fighting, is it really essential for male identity? if you stopped men fighting would they feel less male? I dunno, its complicated.

I had read the Figgs statement as "it was JUDGED bad because it had tits" not "it WAS bad regardless." But I seem to stand corrected.

Venom against the female cast because they were female.
Not simply because it was a bad movie, but hate received because they were female. It's a huge problem for all women all over the world.

Wasn't that mostly a marketing campaign?

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
Lame.
Of course, when the film-makers talked about their movie receiving criticism, they highlighted stuff like that: trolls attacking the film's female leads online, without mentioning that the movie itself is an atrocious sequel.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
As a form of marketing, I mean. The film-makers, while marketing the film, painted criticism of the film as misogyny while failing to mention that the movie itself is quite poor. Lumping everyone who criticized the movie into the misogyny category makes the misogyny category look a lot bigger than it actually is.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
You can't expect the film makers to say their film was poor. Maybe years later, but not immediately. It took years for PJ to admit the Hobbit films suffered because it was a rush job, and that was a good excuse. In this case they would just have to admit they did a bad job - which isn't obvious, about 40% of reviewers liked it.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
There were two types of people who criticised Ghostbusters, the first type criticised the film for sucking big smelly socks in general and not because women were the lead actors but because it was lame, the second type criticised the film for having a female cast because that's what they disliked about it regardless of whether it was good or not. Later they all got lumped together I guess and maybe the film-makers used the backlash as a way of wriggling out of making a truly crappy film. well that's my take on it.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
I haven't seen the film. And I haven't seen the film because I didn't think it could be as good as the original. I just didn't think women could do as entertaining a film as the guys.

Can't see it. Why do they block FREE stuff in other countries? Like our comedy central clips are blocked in Europe. Makes no effing sense. They're FREE. And unlike free donuts it doesn't cost anything to let other people have it.

Re: The YouTube thread [2]
Those first two guys are sort of adorable.
And shy little Courtney...
If we hadn't already had Susan Boyle this would be an even bigger surprise. But damn I love talented kids. They always surprise you, so long as you don't make the mistake of telling them what can't be done.
