I plan to do the same, but I'm not through the kvetching phase yet.

Ad free used to cost us 2000 credits, I'd like to know exactly what we get for our extra three grand. For that price I want a pack of mocha almonds on my pillow.

I see there's no Yiddish element in your part of the world. I think urban dictionary does a good job explaining it. Kvetch

But I see with the extra moolah we get our own domain name. Don't we kind of have that already?

For starters, we've been here for seven years without a price increase until now, which is a fairly long time to go without that happening, so it's unsurprising for things to eventually change. That said, this appears to be more of a restructuring of the overall service than a simple cost boost, as they have added new functionality and combined features such as domain names and going ad-free into "packages" rather than offering each one individually. Looking at the picture Amarië posted and going off memory, SSL encryption, monetization of the forum, and advanced search in messages are all new features. Possibly others as well that I just don't remember.

I don't know exactly what monetization entails in this context and it's likely rendered moot if we go ad-free anyway, but a lack of SSL encryption is a pretty serious security flaw in a modern website so I think it is worth springing for now that it's an option. Wikipedia has a somewhat technical explanation but the long and the short of it is that information you enter into the site (including passwords, though you really shouldn't be using the same password on multiple sites) is rendered secure even if you're on a public or otherwise insecure network. It also offers improved privacy for browsing data in general.

Surprised SSL isn't just standard these days!

Ads are annoying though and often seem to point to random stuff or be so specific that I wonder where I have consent for my data to be used that way.... although I probably did.

I think a new website name would be quite appropriate.

My only concern about getting a new domain name would be all the links it would break, but if we can set up a 301 redirect for hobbitmovieforum.com that wouldn't be an issue. I'm not sure how easy or hard that would be since we purchased the domain name through Forumotion rather than independently, but the people on the Help forum could probably clear things up.

Me too but it's not normally that simple. Change a URL and you normally break more things than you knew existed!

Seems we have a year or so to think about it. We can't change the domain name now. Shrugging
