I need to learn how to play around with CGI when I retire.

the pig was bewilderingly unnecessary. Maybe a farmer put this together? Only farmers think of slaughtering animals as a happy harbinger of the holidays.

Love the reaction videos to Lord of the Rings.
This girl's great. You can tell it's her first time watching. Love seeing people get excited about my favorite film. The last 20 minutes I was in a mess. More tears then her I think. Lol
If you have some spare time watch these. Much more fun seeing all the best bits with someone who hasn't seen the films.

I can sit through it all until that dam song sung by Annie Lennox at the very end ! OMG ! I just blub like anything, that just chokes me up. I wonder how she can sing it, that and the ending credits where you see the sketches of the characters. No Also I can feel that hollowness of when you go back after all that strong adventure, When Frodo says about how can you go back to how it was ?

She really gets it when Sam has the ring, but hesitates giving it back to Frodo.

This did make me think, if only for a moment because I knew, as much as Sean Connery is very well known and was loved, he, is no Gandalf. The nearest character I can think of that he played with thought was the monk, William, in the great film "Name of the Rose".

I feel lucky we had who we did playing the characters of Lord of the Rings. My god we were a hairs breath away from someone either making it or breaking it.

Why would they even consider him for the part? I suppose he is old enough now to have a sort of sweet gruffness about him, but still...

{{ Trying to think who he could have played that would work, given PJ decided it was easier and lazier to not try to adapt dwarf culture but instead to just say dwarves=scottish in accent and culture, I supose he'd have fitted alongside Billy Connolly's Dain as maybe a more book accurate Thorin?  Shrugging
Only place I can possibly think they could try to put him in LotR's would be in smaller side roles- but I could see him as the Gaffer if PJ had bothered to more than name drop the character. Mad Possibly Theoden for a big role or Denethor? }}

In one of these pseudo comic films (Time Bandits, I dunno) he was cast as Agamemnon, and it was jarring. He just doesn't fit in period films. Even in Highlander he was miscast, though that was ahistorical enough to make it sort of okay.

I cant see him as anything else except in the early James Bond films. I think in LOTRs he might be able to play a Dwarf or, under make up as an Orc or Uruk Hai, or, maybe a lesser role as a Ranger of Ithiliien under Faramir, or, maybe a Dunedain even ? I can see a sort of warriorness in him but not as a leader, more as one under. Actually now I think of it a Dunedain is more likely, as long as he did more and said less.

{{ In fairness to Highlander the idea was supposed to be that in his thousands of years of life Ramirez has got very good at pcking up local languages an accents to better fit in. And he's been looking for Conner in Scotland for about 5-10 years years before he finds him. Plenty of time to have picked up a scottish accent though he must have been on the wrong coast as Connery has an east coast accent and Highlander is set in the western isles and Highlands. Its history in general in the Scottish parts is actually surpringly good for pulp fiction, the Macleods castle you see is indeed the catle of the Chief of the Macleods to this day, the battle they fight against the Frasers is perfectly plausible they had many battles and were clan rivals, the various banners and crests you see are aslo correct and the emphasis on bagpipes and lament is also fitting as the Macleods were famed pipers. Even the religous aspects are there, the film is set right before the reformation in the 1500's so the Macleods are correctly portrayed as Catholic as were all the Highland clans by that time, shortly after the film the Macleods would become Protestant. So they got that right too. The coming fall of Catholism is even hinted at in the film with the decidedly sneaky, unpleasant and unholy like actions of the Macleod priest on the battle field.

Connery was a far better actor than his roles tended to allow him to show in my view.
Az you shoud give The Hill a try for a different sort of Connery, but its a hard watch about a British army prison camp for British soliders in WW2, also contains lots of racial slur of the time -

its up there with the Og Wickerman in my top films.

Or the absolutely delightful if ridiculous and crammed with irish stereotypes Darby O'Gill and the Little People, its also a wonderful film if you are a fan of old school practical incamera effects, the sort of stuff Pj employed to make Hobbits look small and an almost nonstop series of fantastic matte paintings, even if they do make Connery sing and his irish accent, well there is probably a reason he just stuck to his own after this! But its a charming film full of that Golden Era Hollywood glow.

As for historicals, he did make a few of them, probably his most famous is as an aged Robin Hood in Robin and Marion, which has  one hell of a cast-

In his prime I think he could with reflection have made a good Theoden or Denethor. At the time hemade the Hill I could even see him as Aragorn. }}

Lots have said about that film "The Hill". I get tired of tv warning me about being offended. They do it even with Agatha Christie. That was then, it was how it was at that time. Dont people think in a 100 yrs time some odd person will remark on how we speak, act etc ? I loved "Robin and Marion", cried at the end. another great film is "The Man who would be King". you could imagine a touch of Denethor or Theoden there maybe ? Enjoyed hearing how Scotland was kept as honest as possible in "Highlander", found that interesting. Still like "The Name of The Rose" as one of my fave Connery films. Smile
