Mmmm if I go by bus I can get there for about 40 quid.
But then there is accommodation (how is Oxford for ditches, fields and hedgerows?) and buckie of course. Thats at least another 40 right there. And I suppose if I have to represent Forumshire at it then I should probably get the kilt cleaned, or at least beaten a bit. And then there is the bail for jail after I get into numerous fights with the English for wearing a kilt....
Mmmmm, I will let you know within a week Halfy.

I know a nice tree to sleep under in Cambridge (I think I told that story somewhere) but not sure about Oxford. Nice bridges to sleep under I believe. There are youth hostels - at least one in Oxford I stayed in once has unisex bathrooms, which throws you for a loop when not expecting it. Pretty cheap - if I wasn't in love with the idea of trying out an Oxford dorm room (just to get a taste of the rarified air) I'd go the youth hostel route. They seem to only offer single rooms in the dorms.

I'm seeing in the range of 18-25 pounds/night in the multi-bed shared hostel rooms.  I could perhaps do one night in the Oxford dorms and one night in the hostel to help watch each other's back: them young co-eds can get aggressive.

The single hostel rooms seem to be already gone, but I haven't made a concerted search.

Thanks Halfy- but 3 nights, September in England- if it were Scotland Id just take a tent and camp out somewhere- but England has rather annoying laws where the people don't have a right to the land Mad so I'd have to go find somewhere to pitch up, official camp site or something. I shall look into it.

I'll be damned, don't find camping sites so convenient to American towns. If I wasn't flying I'd bring camping gear and do that (plus the one night in the dorm which had damn well better live up to my expectations!)

http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/clubpricing

You have to actually book to get the actual price, but they do try hard to explain what it might be.  But with the range of 7 to 11.80 pounds, it's low enough to not worry about being a pound off in your estimate.

EDIT: Spoke too soon - the "pricing explained" link does nothing of the kind.  But at least you know the upper and lower limit.  Start booking and see what comes up.  You can always pull the plug before paying.

I just did it for you.  Non-members price for 3x3 meter pitch, no electricity is 43 pounds for 3 nights.  Member's price is 25 pounds, but I don't assume you're a member.

45 quid! For three nights use of a tiny scrap of ground- bloody English and their stupid trespass laws Mad
I can get there and back on the bus for less than a patch of ground to pitch a tent on will cost me! Mad

Figg- try looking at bus fares, all the train fares I checked leaving Glasgow were equally eye-watering. Mad

I think it's fun you guys are thinking seriously about a meet up. Very Happy I don't know about the feasibility of it for myself, but I checked the fares and it's about 70£ back and forth by plane, and 38£ back and forth by bus.

Oh this is awesome!!! Sorry I've been a bit busy (didn't think this would get so much attention!) but if others are planning on going I'll do my best to go! I have to make sure I'm not in Stratford that weekend though (I know, I have such a difficult life here Rolling Eyes ) so I'll double check on that and pricing and I'll let you all know for sure if I'm going! It'd be great to be joined by some loyal subjects queen

Only 70 pounds by plane?  I wouldn't even be asking if anyone else was going if I had that price.  As it is it's not obvious yet if anyone else is going. Neutral
