Well I tried to visit the forum again today but it had logged me out.  Well, no problem, that happens sometimes due to cookie weirdness.  But trying to sign back in with the password I'm pretty sure I used didn't work.  Nor did the other two passwords I thought I might have used.  Then I tried the "forgot password" tool with the e-mail address that I know I used to register (and have the confirmation e-mail to prove it) ... and they say it's not an address they recognize.  For a second I thought they had banned me for mentioning that there was another Forumshire out there and that we really would have another forum war on our hands.  But it turns out that a couple days ago they actually got kicked out of their old webhost and weren't able to take their database with them so they had to start over from scratch, which I feel for.  So it looks like peace will prevail after all.

So while doing another round of vanity Googling of myself (I swear I don't do it that often; I think this was the first time I'd done it since finding the alternate Forumshire and making this thread six months ago) I discovered an interview with me that appeared pretty high in the results.  I had given the interview via e-mail like three or four months ago but after the initial back and forth they never followed up to say that the interview was life, and as they were still setting up the site at the time the interview was conducted I didn't even have a URL to check.  But it is up and they said some very nice things about me in the introduction (I checked the other interviews they did and they only went out of their way to compliment one other guy so I take it as sincere ).

It was fun to get to put my thoughts about forums and online communities in general into somewhat more "official" form.  Usually it only comes out when I'm making overly long responses to posts by halfwise or Malickfan. Most people who talk at length about running forums do so from the perspective of a professional webmaster looking to make money so I was pleased that the people behind this sight were interested in the opinions of a hobbyist like myself.  It was a nice little validation to have been approached even when I thought they had never published the interview at all.

Cool. I think you have some very valid points (not that there's anything new in that, of course) about forums as communities, and building a forum as building a community. I do think that describes this place rater well.

That was a good interview. And is nice to see that people outside the Tolkien beltway might get a peek behind the curtain here.
