The only two action scenes that made me feel anything other than bored were the barrel escape and Smaug's death. Since the former made me feel bemusement and the latter conveyed genuine emotion, it was a pretty easy vote for me.
I had voted for Thorin leading the charge of dwarves from Erebor (ultimately ridiculous, I know). How can 13 dwarves turn the tide of the battle? Rather silly upon further reflection. But I did like the music during that scene, and we had yet to hear Thorin's theme set to him doing something really heroic. And just to try to defend my vote a little more, at least with Thorin's charge it is very clear what is happening on that part of the battle field as opposed to the sequences in Dale, which are just confusing. Oh, and yes that giant bell was fucking stupid.
I think what turned me off to Smaug's death was Smaug's stupid speech to Bard, and how he basically offers himself up to be killed.

Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
I dunno, arrogance is a pretty big part of Smaug's character. The circumstances behind the one gap in his armor are different in the movie, but in both versions of the story he (justifiably) believed himself to be invincible.
You make a good case for Thorin's charge, and while I didn't like it quite as much, I do agree that it was one of the better parts of the battle.

Great ceremony, Tin! Ian McKellen was my first thought as best actor as well, but then I remembered Sean Astin as Sam. Loved his performance, and I hoped perhaps now he would finally get an award for it Anyway, McKellen is a worthy winner as well! Looking forward to the rest

It's more or less what happened in the book though -
"Suddenly there was a great shout, and from the Gate came a trumpet call. They had forgotten Thorin! .... Out leapt the King of the Mountain, and his companions followed him....Wolf and rider fell or fled before them....'To me! To me! Elves and Men!' he cried. 'To me, Oh my kinsfolk!' he cried, and his voiced echoed like a horn in the valley.
Down, heedless of order rushed all the dwarves of Dain to his help. Down too came many of the lake-men, for Bard could not restrain them, and out upon the other side came many spearmen of the elves. Once again the Goblins were stricken in the valley; and their bodies were piled in heaps till Dale was dark and hideous with their corpses. The wargs were scattered and Thorin drove right against the bodyguard of Bolg. But he could not pierce their ranks."
So for a bit he did turn the tide, though ultimately they were hemmed in and largely destroyed. It was for the eagles and Beorn to truly turn the tide. In this respect the movie wasn't too far from the books. But Thorin wasn't supposed to be still left standing when that happened.

Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
Welcome back! I have sufficiently slept off my "hangover" and am ready to continue on with the awards! I advise any of you who bought the buckie to NOT DRINK IT. It seems the recipe I devised to make it less calories has in turn made it 5 times more potent. Don't tell Galadriel, but I may have drunk her mirror water to sober up...
Anyway, this next award is a very hard one to vote for. Musical preference differs from person to person, which was shown by the votes for the nominees. However, a winner was chosen.
The FFA for BEST END CREDITS SONG goes to:
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard by far, and hearing it live in that video is ENCHANTING! The credits of ROTK make me want to cry every time. Not so much for Last Goodbye, I'd say that's just sentiment instead of beauty. But onward we go!

Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
I AM ANNOUNCING THIS NEXT AWARD SIT DOWN TIN!!
This is by far the award I have MOST been looking forward to. Peter Jackson is a man of many talents. The way he finds a way to get his hands into every aspect of production astounds me! No wonder Lord of the Rings was so much better than the Hobbit! PJ was worn out! So much so he didn't even have a cameo in the last movie!
But for the ones he did, you lot voted on them.
So the FFA for BEST PJ CAMEO goes to:
Not a surprise really. It was funny to see the director get shot! Tin and Huan tell me it's a form of poetic justice? I don't know what that means but it sounds positive so I agree! And it's always nice to see the hard working crew get the chance to be in the actual film!

Ehem. Ok. Guess we're moving on {{{{{{{{{Beren if you ever interrupt me again you'll be scrubbing Manwe's Eagle's cage with your tongue!}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
This next award was another write in, and to be honest, I wasn't sure a winner would be decided on. It was a tough category (for me at least) to just pick one, though in the end a majority of four votes decided this winner.
The Nominees decided on for BEST REALIZED MIDDLE EARTH ENVIRONMENT are:
Moria
The Shire (Hobbtion)
Minas Tirith
Bree
Rivendell
Helms Deep
And the FFA goes to:
A solid win. While many of the environments in LOTR were spectacular sets (which sadly can't really be said for the Hobbit) The Shire and Hobbiton became a real place. It's beautiful, tranquil, which all in turn validate Frodo's choice to save it in the film.
Our Final Award is next, one I invented for fun, which will be presented by Huan, well, presently.

Hmm...I didn't get around to voting this time, but would have thought Minas Tirith to be the shoo-in. But have to admit, Hobbiton set the stage well. Despite the grass.

Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
My last chance to speak. Alright. So this final award is one that celebrates both the books and the films. These lines were in the books and either left as they were or slightly altered for film form. Some were purely invented (like Aragorn's speech) and found a way to tug at our emotions. These quotes celebrate what Boyens and Walsh did right (which is very little). As it was that most of these lines did come from Tolkien's pen, naturally a tie occured, one Tin (again) didn't have the heart to break.
So, the FFA for BEST QUOTE FROM THE MIDDLE EARTH SAGA goes to:
AND
Both deserving winners! And now I must away ere break of the next day I must be off to Valinor. It's the annual "Chase the Noldor Around the Docks" Day and I've got some Feanorians to catch!

Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
Well Everyone, that concludes the final Forumshire Film Awards A sad prospect for me, but also kind of a relief. Who knows? We can make awards for whatever we want! We could do extended edition awards, behind the scenes awards, BOOK awards even! The perseverance of Forumshire makes me happy to call myself your queen. I hope you all enjoyed the awards this year, even though things got...interrupted...
To leave on a sentimental note, I'd like to share this video. Whatever qualms we have with the movie, we can't help but admire the cast and crew that worked so hard and the friendships that were made as a result. To me, at least, it makes the whole thing worth it.
We have had the time of our lives, and may there be many more times to come

Thank you for a wonderful awards show, Tin! It will be strange not having any new material to vote on in the awards next year. Perhaps we'll have to do retrospective awards at some point to see how our opinions evolve.
Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
Wonderful Tin! thanks so much for hosting the awards, it was great fun. its a bitter sweet ending

Re: 2014 Forumshire Film Awards!
That was a sad video Tinuviel posted I think it was Merry & Pippin that 'got' me most out of all the characters. They seemed to have such a bond, they were so alike. I felt the 'goodbye' more with them. In fact Ive spent so much time being angry at The Hobbit that its only just sunk in how empty it feels. LOTRs for all its flaws was heads & shoulders above The Hobbit & a far superior film.....*sigh*................
