Mayoralty 2014: nominations
Welcome to the first stage of the 2014 Forumshire Mayoral election! Back by "popular demand", this provides the people of Forumshire a way to choose a representative for themselves. The Mayor's duties include presiding at the "annual" picnic, giving speeches, and possibly other things to be determined at a later date.
Since we're such sticklers for tradition here, candidacy in the election will require a nomination by another member of the forum. The nomination period will remain open for at least two weeks, probably until the beginning of the picnic in early August. As we start to get nominees, we might see debates, muckracking, and other electiony goodness. It was a lot of fun last time, but the membership has changed a lot since then, so I'm excited to see how this plays out.
The only rule for eligibility (beyond receiving a nomination) is that Admins and Mods can't be Mayor, so beyond that, it's wide open.

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
A quick bit of catch-up from the other thread: Norc and Odo already seem to have gotten some public support for their potential candidacies (though Odo's is mostly coming from the Banks clan so far ). Bungo also appeared to express interest.
Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
Do you have a link to the last election? It might be interesting to brush up of Forumshire political history.

Sure thing. It was spread over a number of threads. Re-reading them was a trip down memory lane for me; the forum has changed a lot since then.

http://www.hobbitmovieforum.com/t278-debate-your-candidates
http://www.hobbitmovieforum.com/t285-meet-your-new-mayor
I'm pretty sure that the events of those weeks overflowed into more threads, but those were highlights that I could recall/find easily.
Edit: it's also worth perusing the news archives from that time.

Does that mean both are officially nominated already, or does somebody still have to do that?
(Have to do things properly, this being Forumshire. )

At first I thought this said "Morality 2014" and I thought, "Oh great, another lecture about how I'm a terrible person." And then I thought it said "Mortality 2014."

Aww, I even checked that "mayoralty" was a real word before making this thread.

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
I want to thank Dave and Azriel for asking about the last election because I'm having a blast re-reading those threads for the first time in ages. Here's the oath of candidacy I wrote.
{{{The reason for the last sentence was the attempted coup against me two months before the election, whose membership reached disturbingly deep into the heart of Forumshire. }}}
I, [candidate's name], being of sound mind and somewhat compromised sanity, do hereby swear/affirm that if elected I shall execute the duties of the office of Mayor to the best of my abilities. I shall follow the directions of the Queen and Admin of Forumshire and shall represent the interests of its people. If necessary, I shall forego buckie in times of crisis. If I am approached by anyone suggesting a treasonous or seditious plot, or if I am seized by any urge to take power for myself or another at the expense of the Queen and/or Admin, I shall turn myself in to the Secret Service immediately.

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
So we nominate someone whether they want it or not ? A secret ballot or do we come straight out with it ?

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
Nominations are done in public, but people can decline to run or pull out of the race later. The actual voting later on is done through a secret ballot though.
Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
Okey Dokey Thankyou Eldo.

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
I have decided not to bother.... So I nominate Mirabella. A wonderful lass. And a girl too. I think there is too much anti-girl stuff in this place. I would add - not only is Mirabella a girl but she has been here much longer than that other girl - who I refuse to name in polite company.

Admirable fellow by all means but, sadly Miss Leelee, Eldo is not eligible -- well, not as a Mayoral candidate anyway... {{{Thank goodness! }}}

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
I accept the nomination, Uncle Odo. And if elected, I vow to bring back Femininity in all t's Wholesome Varieties, and good old fashioned traditional Roles for Women. It's time we Women stood up for Our Menfolk and earn their Proper Respect. I vow to run a tight and tough camapign standing up for the (Traditional) Rights of Women everywhere -- even noxious younger women who I will not name, for they are Immoral and Talk back too Much, which isn't feminine, and I will not dignify them by confirming their existence.
VOTE 1 - Mirabella Banks.

Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
Thank you very much for your vote of confidence, Leelee! Unfortunately, my Admin position renders me ineligible for the Mayoralty, but you can rest assured knowing I'll keep a close eye on whoever wins to make sure they toe the party line.
Re: Mayoralty 2014: nominations
So, Norc and Odo so far. Is that it? Surely Ringdrotten or Bungobaggins would like to put in a word for themselves. They seem solid. (If nothing else I like their actions in RtD: straightforward, easy-to-draw things).
